Great to meet the founder of Barry Smith and have the opportunity to tour their production facility. It was fascinating to see firsthand the care, innovation, and scientific expertise that goes into developing products designed to support gut health.

The more we learn about the gut microbiome, the clearer it becomes that gut health influences far more than just digestion. Probiotics can help support the balance of beneficial bacteria in the gut, which may contribute to improved digestive health, nutrient absorption, immune function, and overall wellbeing. Research also continues to explore the important connection between gut health, mood, and mental wellbeing through the gut-brain axis.

Seeing the production process up close and learning about the research behind Symprove gave me a greater appreciation for the science and quality standards involved in creating effective probiotic products.

A really insightful visit and a reminder of the important role that gut health can play in supporting our overall health and wellbeing.

I have just returned from working in Rural Australia. Over 200 km from the nearest major hospital. Red dirt roads, remote airstrips and a beautiful coastline.

Working in remote Australian communities continues to be one of the most rewarding parts of my career. It’s a privilege to care for a diverse population, including Aboriginal and South Sea Islander communities, while adapting to the unique challenges that come with rural and remote medicine.

Out here, medicine often returns to its roots — working as a true old-fashioned generalist, managing whatever comes through the door when there’s no specialist in sight!

Knowing when to worry about your child’s fever can be stressful. The Traffic Light System helps parents recognise when a child might need medical attention.

🟢 GREEN – Low Risk
These signs suggest your child is likely okay, but monitor them closely:
• Alert and responsive
• Normal skin colour
• Drinking well / good wet nappies
• Mild symptoms (cough, runny nose)

👉 Care at home, give fluids, use paracetamol/ibuprofen for comfort.

🟡 AMBER – Moderate Risk
These signs mean you should seek medical advice:
• Drowsy, irritable, not their usual self
• Breathing faster or working harder to breathe
• Poor feeding or fewer wet nappies
• Temperature >39°C in children 3–6 months
• Shivering, persistent crying
• Rash that fades when pressed

👉 Call your GP, urgent care, or seek same-day medical review.

🔴 RED – High Risk (Emergency)
Seek urgent care / go to A&E if your child has:
• Pale, blue, or mottled skin
• Difficult or noisy breathing
• Very drowsy or unresponsive
• A rash that does NOT fade with pressure
• Seizures
• Fever in a baby under 3 months (>38°C)

👉 This is an emergency — get medical help immediately.

(This is not an exhaustive list of every symptom)

💡 Remember: Trust your instincts. If you’re worried, it’s always okay to seek medical advice.
