Why does a Funeral Director walk in front of the hearse?
It’s a question we’re often asked.
This traditional practice is sometimes known as “paging” and is a mark of dignity and respect. By walking ahead of the hearse, the Funeral Director symbolically leads the deceased on their final journey, while helping to set a slow and respectful pace for the funeral procession.
The tradition also has practical roots. In the days of horse-drawn hearses, the undertaker would walk ahead to guide the horses, clear a safe path through traffic and crowds, and ensure the procession travelled at an appropriate pace.
Today, although times have changed, the tradition continues — a simple but meaningful gesture of respect, dignity and care.
