Of course all babies cry, but their default should not be screaming for hours

A baby cries to communicate with you that something is not right. Often there is no “medical” problem and baby is essentially well, but they just aren’t happy. As a parent this can be really distressing to see your baby unsettled.

Always speak to your midwife or GP if you are worried about your baby first though to make sure nothing major going on. But if medical problems have been addressed/discounted and they are just not happy then a paediatric osteopath is a great place to go and get them checked over for structural tensions.

As an osteopath my job is one of investigation- to give babies a voice to why they are upset. Tensions in the body maybe why your baby can’t relax. Signs such a preferring looking one way (or feeding better on one side), reflux, colic, constipation, a poor latch, car seat aversions may all be linked to tensions in the body. I’ve worked with babies for over 23 years and the results can be dramatic!

I always aim to empower parents to support their babies effectively so I share lots of simple techniques that can be done at home.

Osteopaths should be registered with the general osteopathic council so check before you book.

Understanding tummy pain in babies helps you understand how to help your baby if they are in pain. Think of yourself- if you are in pain you want to curl up a bit, if you have just eaten a big meal you really direct want to be scrunched into a ball you want to stretch out- babies are exactly the same. They need length (and a bit of movement) to help them digest effectively. This hand hold does it all- an opportunity to tuck up if they are straining yet lengthen out to help digestion. It’s a complete winner.

Tummy time does not have to be done on the floor! There are many positions that “count” as tummy time that they might prefer! Over your arm, on your tummy, over the knees will all give the benefits of tummy time. Try some of these alternative positions and see if your baby finds them more comfortable

I’ve been asked by so many people what can be done to help babies with hiccups. Here’s a video to show you how by stretching the lower ribs you can help a baby really use their diaphragm for breathing- which in turn helps to strengthen that diagram to reduce the hiccups they are getting.

For those babies struggling with colic, constipation and wind, tummy massage can really make such a difference. If they don’t like being flat out suffer with reflux then you can try it sitting or over your arm.
