Couples therapy works best if you see a counsellor within the first few years of difficulties beginning. We so often push down those feeling of something not being right we make changes to accommodate and make things better yet they aren’t really helping one parter is usually diminishing. If counselling starts hear success rates are above 70%. The longer it’s left those percentages begin to drop. Not because the work can’t be done but because resentment sets in and people don’t want to try.
Don’t be like Barbara and Graham (fictitious names) who left it 15 years and now there is frustration exhaustion and burnout in the relationship. And now there are only threads to try and begin rebuilding.
Book today, gain some support, new coping mechanisms and a tweak in your language. Plus some support with boundaries and help your relationship build and grow together.

Where is your thermostat set?
When it’s hot we can open the door and let the heat out but if our thermostat is set to 80 degrees as soon as the door shuts it’s going to return to that temperature.
It’s the same with our minds.
If our thoughts are set in a particular direction then everything we see, everything we hear and everything we read be be in that context.
We choose the context we experience life. Do we do it from a place of possibility, love, joy and possibilities. Or do we experience it from a place of dissatisfaction, disappointment and negativity.
Romans 12:2 tells us not to conform to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Philippians 4:8 tells us to fix our minds on all things true, just, pure, honerable, lovely and commendable
The what and the how to change our minds default setting.
We can experience some truly hideous things in life. If our focus stays on that/those events it has the power to destroy our lives. If we choose to change the focus it doesn’t. It’s becomes a moment in time that happened to us but has now passed and left in the shadow it came from. It becomes a deflated balloon rather than one taking centre stage casting its shadow over everything. Moving with you as you traverse through life in the same was these people were under this balloon as the moved it to another part of the field before they deflated it.

Love is not a feeling but a choice!
The feelings and chemicals draw you together, the interactions keep the feelings alive but ultimately it’s a choice to continue to interact to sustain the connection.
When things are beginning to go wrong in a relationship, please don’t leave it.
It is a sign that something isn’t connecting in your relationship whether it be priorities or communication or even respect. Seek support to help you realign.
A lot of people seek counselling when it’s too late, there has been too much hurt and as a defence 1 if not both parties withdrawal to protect themselves. And it’s difficult to reconnect at that point.
I’ve had so many couples in my room this year that have said if we’d come to you 18 months ago then the out come could have been so different but too much has happened and I’m not prepared to even try now I just want out of this relationship.
And so many times their perfect day lines up, and what drew them together is still there underneath the pain. But the hurt is too much to risk trying one last time. The decision has already been made.
Please don’t leave counselling as a final option, make it your first a find a counsellor who you click with and who is going to help you improve your communications and they way you connect. Someone who will help roots of your relationship go deep like a mighty tree.

Mutual Respect
Good communication skills
Healthy boundaries
Curiosity

Once these are mastered then there is no challenge you cannot meet.

I see so many short reels on boundaries and they talk about walking away from people but there is so much more to boundaries. Walking away is the last action not the first. Good boundaries enable you to have relationships with difficult people. They enable you not to take on board their negativity, and for you to keep your peace. But it starts with you.

Good boundaries increase your sense of safety
They safeguard you

When I started my training placement all those years ago (2009) the counselling service manager sat me down and asked me what experience I was bringing from my own life not just the theory I had learnt, by the end she was almost crying. So let me share a snippet with you as to what makes me the counsellor I am today. Because it’s so much more than theory. It’s lived experience.

My first experience of death was aged 7. We had 7 family deaths that year. Between then and commencing training I experienced 2 major surgeries on my feet. The loss of my dream because of the issues that caused the need for surgery. A parents terminal illness diagnosis. Struggles with an eating disorder not picked up by doctors but by others and with their interventions stopped it developing into something serious. More death of family and friends including a mid term miscarriage, my cousins 1 year old, my aunt and a parent who wasn’t diagnosed with a terminal illness. Plus navigating marriage issues.

So yes I can hold you and anything you bring! You will receive, compassion, acceptance and understanding.
I am trauma informed, and will sit there with you and will walk the journey with you for as long as you need.
We will talk, I will encourage and explore, and we will discover core beliefs that drive thoughts and actions. I will then offer a range of appropriate activities to help challenge harmful beliefs and/or create helpful thought patterns. I will check what you take away from each session.
We will go at your speed
I will hold you accountable for the things you choose to do, but with compassion.
I will widen your window and broaden your vision of the situation and possibilities to move through your experience.

I will not demand
I will not cajole
I will not judge
You will never be too much!
I am here for YOU!
