🧘‍♀️ Position of the Week: Pigeon Pose

Pigeon Pose is a fantastic stretch for opening the hips, glutes and lower back—areas that often become tight from sitting, running, cycling or everyday life.

Done correctly, it can help:
• Improve hip mobility
• Reduce tension in the glutes and piriformis
• Ease stiffness in the lower back
• Support better posture and movement

Remember, flexibility takes time. Ease into the stretch, breathe deeply, and never force the position. If you feel pain (rather than a gentle stretch), come out of the pose and modify it.

Part 2: Is it really sciatica? 🤔

Last time we explained that not all leg pain is sciatica. So how can you tell the difference?

While only a thorough assessment can provide a diagnosis, here are some general signs:

👉 Sciatica
• Pain often starts in the lower back or buttock and travels down the leg.
• You may experience tingling, numbness or pins and needles.
• Sometimes the pain reaches the foot or toes.
• Coughing, sneezing or prolonged sitting can make it worse.

👉 Referred pain from the lower back
• Usually feels like a dull ache in the buttock or thigh.
• Doesn’t always travel below the knee.
• Often changes with movement or certain positions.
• Typically doesn’t cause numbness or tingling.

👉 Piriformis syndrome
• Pain is usually deep in the buttock.
• Sitting for long periods often aggravates it.
• Pain may travel down the back of the leg.
• Symptoms are often reproduced by stretching or contracting the piriformis muscle.

Remember, these are only general patterns. Many conditions can overlap, which is why self-diagnosis isn’t always reliable.

Adding a few minutes of skipping after your run can be a great way to improve your coordination, footwork and lower leg strength. It helps build resilience in your calves, Achilles and feet, encourages better running mechanics, and can even improve your balance and agility.

The key is to start slowly. If you’re new to skipping, begin with 30–60 seconds at a time and gradually build up as your body adapts.

Strong runners aren’t just built by running—they’re built by training the muscles that keep them moving efficiently.
