A trip back to where it all began today ☕

I met up with my friend and fellow dietitian Helen,Island Nutrition - Guernsey at Coffee Quarters ,Royal Haslar, Gosport — the site of the former Royal Hospital Haslar, where we both worked back in 1998.

Haslar was where I first started my journey into military nutrition — a fascinating and formative part of my career that I look back on with a great deal of fondness. I'd come from a difficult work environment beforehand, and the team at Haslar genuinely restored my confidence. Helen, Lorraine and Julie were warm, supportive and brilliant at what they did. The fact that we are all still in touch over 25 years later says everything.

The Royal Hospital Haslar itself has a remarkable history - one of Britain's most significant military hospitals, built in the 1740s and operational for over 250 years. It has since been converted into private residences, and sitting in the café on the same site all these years later was quite a moment.

From military nutrition then to gut health and menopause nutrition now - it's been quite a journey. The experiences and the people you encounter along the way shape you more than you realise at the time.

I'm delighted to announce that I'll be speaking at the Hartwood Health Menopause Evening 'What You Need to Know' on Thursday 21st May 2026 at the The Lismoyne Hotel , Fleet.

Menopause and perimenopause can be overwhelming. The symptoms can be relentless - brain fog, fatigue, weight changes, mood swings and poor sleep. On top of that, finding clear, trustworthy information can feel like an uphill battle. So many women are left feeling confused, unheard and unsure where to turn. You are absolutely not alone in feeling that way. 💜

That's exactly why evenings like this matter so much.

I'll be joining the brilliant Dr Kirstie Bridges (GP with a specialist interest in women's health and menopause) and Sarah Ayers (Personal Trainer specialising in peri- and post-menopause fitness) for what I know will be a really informative and empowering evening. Between us we hope to give you practical, evidence based information that you can actually use - covering hormones, nutrition and fitness, all through the lens of menopause. 💚

As a Registered Dietitian, I'll be focusing on how nutrition can really support your body through this transition because what you eat can make a difference to how you feel!

Dietetics is such an important profession, however, there seems to be a lack of understanding of what dietitians really get up to. Dietitians make a vital contribution to health across many different specialisms and healthcare settings. They support patients at every stage of life, from paediatric to older people and everything in between. Those working in the dietetic profession provide care and support for patients with long term and chronic conditions, as well as playing a significant role in prevention and protecting the public’s general health. From issues with weight to IBS to Coeliac disease, dietitians work with it all.
For more information on how our dietitians can help you, don’t hesitate to get in touch! We are always happy to help!

There are so many myths surrounding dietitians and what they do. That why we’re here to break some of them down for you with our 3 common misconceptions about dietitians!
Dietitians are the only nutrition professionals to be regulated by law and are governed by an ethical code to ensure that they always work to the highest standard. The dietetic profession covers a wide range of specialisms, meaning dietitians know about a lot more than just food. Not only are they clinically trained in health conditions and diseases, but they also provide up to date research on the nutritional value of foods and our nutritional requirements. They are involved in public health initiatives to improve the health of the nation and those in it.

Some amazing stats from the British Nutrition Foundation for Healthy Eating Week. Did you know that every year in the UK 4.5 million tonnes of food and drink that could be eaten is wasted? To put that into perspective, that’s enough food to fill 8 Wembley stadiums, 90 royal albert hall’s, 38 million wheelie bins, 490000 bin lorries and 3600 Olympic sized swimming pools.
What’s worse, most of this waste isn’t coming from food chains and supermarkets as you might think. In fact, 70% of food wasted in the UK comes straight from our households. So, what can you do to make a difference? Here’s some simple ways that you can stop wasting food:
1. Save your leftovers – chill your left-over food and enjoy it the next day or freeze it for another time. There’s no need to throw leftovers in the bin!

2. Know your portions – measure out your portion sizes. This is especially important with foods like pasta and rice where it is easy to make too much.

3. Plan your meals – write a shopping list and avoid shopping when you’re hungry. This will help you only buy what you really need.

Our free, downloadable meal planners and grocery lists are perfect for helping you reduce your food waste. If you would like a copy, contact us and we will send it over!

In the UK, it is recommended that we eat at least 5 portions of fruit and veg per day. 🍇🍌 ⠀
Results from a 2018 study that only 28% adults and 18% children consumed 5 or more portions per day.😲⠀
One portion of fruit or veg is 80g.⠀
Handy measures are:⠀

Fruit - 1 apple, banana, pear, orange or nectarine, 2 kiwi fruit, 7 strawberries, 2 apricots, 1/2 grapefruit, 1 slice melon (5cm), 1 large slice pineapple or 2 slices mango ⠀
Vegetables- 3 heaped tablespoons cooked carrots, peas, sweetcorn or cauliflower florets, side bowl of salad, 1 medium tomato, 7 cherry tomatoes, 2 broccoli spears, 4 heaped tablespoons of cooked kale, spinach or green beans.⠀

Potatoes, yams and cassava are classified as starchy food so don't count towards 5 a day.⠀

Are you going to get your 5 in today? 🌞🌞

Over the last couple of weeks, I have been involved in the Professionalism in Practice module, which is one of the modules in the MSc Human Nutrition at the University of Surrey. It was great to be able to deliver a lecture, advise on clinical practice and assess student work. The students were so keen and enthusiastic. Thank you to the lovely Juliet Wilson, course lead, for inviting me along. It was definitely a learning curve for me!

How do I lose weight?
There is so much information around on what we should do to lose weight, it is difficult to know where to start.
Many eating plans and programmes promise quick weight loss and this is often achieved through one or more ways including: a drastic reduction in energy intake, cutting out a food group, buying meal replacements and products that claim to promote weight loss.
Many of these methods are not sustainable in the long term and are potentially, nutritionally inadequate. It is so important to maintain a varied and balanced intake when you are trying to lose weight. This ensures that your body gets all the nutrients (carbohydrates, fats, protein, vitamins and minerals) it needs. These nutrients work together in our body to keep us going but a prolonged, reduced intake can really impact how we feel and function.
