It's going to be a hot one this week!
We wanted to share a gentle reminder about keeping your dogs safe and comfortable on grooming days.
Please try to avoid walking your dog right before their appointment, and ideally avoid walking them to the salon at all during hot spells, as this can raise their body temperature before they even arrive with us. This is especially important for small breeds and brachycephalic dogs such as Shish Tzu's, French Bulldogs, Pugs and Bulldogs, who find it much harder to regulate their temperature and cool themselves down.
It is always worth knowing the signs of heat related illness in dogs, so you can act quickly if needed. These can include heavy or rapid panting, excessive drooling, bright red or pale gums, lethargy or weakness, disorientation, vomiting, and in more serious cases, collapse.
If you notice any of these signs, please move your dog to a cool, shaded area straight away, offer small amounts of water, and use cool (not ice cold) water on their body, particularly around the paws, ears and groin. Please contact your vet immediately, as heatstroke can become serious very quickly and professional advice is always the safest option.
We are always happy to help keep appointments as calm and stress free as possible during the summer months, so please do get in touch if you would like to discuss timings or any concerns about your dog and the heat.
