This. Exactly. Thank you Sue!
Why your horse might benefit from regular physio — even when everything seems fine
One of the most common things I hear is:
“But he’s going well… he feels fine.”
And often, that’s true.
But what we don’t always see are the small adaptations happening underneath.
The slight changes in how the body is moving.
The areas working a little harder than others.
The patterns developing quietly over time.
None of these necessarily cause an obvious problem in the moment.
But they can influence how comfortable the horse feels,
how easily they move,
and how well they’re able to sustain their work over time.
A longitudinal study of dressage horses found that those assessed and treated regularly — even when no obvious issues were present —
tended to perform better, remain in work longer, and progress further.
Not because something was being “fixed” each time…
but because changes were being recognised early,
and responded to thoughtfully.
This is the shift:
From waiting for something to go wrong…
to noticing what may already be changing.
Because often, the goal isn’t to treat problems.
It’s to understand the horse well enough
that problems don’t have the chance to develop.
If you’re not quite sure what you’re seeing with your own horse, this may be a helpful place to start:
