Today we’re shining the spotlight on Davidsons Chemists! 🌟

Continuing our October focus on the important role of community pharmacies, today we’re highlighting Davidsons Chemists and the valuable services their teams provide to patients across our local communities.

At Lour Road Group Practice, we regularly work alongside four Davidsons branches:

Did you know that using the same pharmacy can help the team build a better understanding of your medication needs?

Your regular pharmacist can become familiar with the medicines you take, helping them to:

Davidsons also encourages patients to keep their medical history and contact details up to date. This helps their teams provide safe, appropriate care and contact you about your prescriptions when needed.

💊 PHARMACY FIRST SCOTLAND – AND PHARMACY FIRST PLUS!

Community pharmacies offer much more than prescription dispensing!

Through NHS Pharmacy First Scotland, pharmacists can provide advice, treatment and, where appropriate, referral for a range of common conditions.

But did you know that some pharmacists have undertaken additional training to become Independent Prescribers?

Through Pharmacy First PLUS, these pharmacists can assess and treat a wider range of common conditions and, when appropriate, prescribe medication without you necessarily needing a GP appointment.

👩‍⚕️ MEET LAUREN CLARKE!

One of the leaflets we’re sharing today introduces Lauren Clarke, a prescribing pharmacist with Davidsons Chemists.

Lauren’s additional prescribing qualifications allow her to build upon the standard Pharmacy First Scotland service, offering further assessment and treatment options for eligible patients.

Please remember that prescribing pharmacist availability and the conditions they can treat may vary, so it’s always best to check with your local branch.

Our community pharmacy colleagues are an important part of the wider healthcare team.

🩷🎀 WEAR IT PINK – TAKE TWO! 🎀🩷

Well, we had every intention of sharing some lovely photos of the Lour Road Team wearing pink today in support of Breast Cancer Now… but unfortunately, it was one of those days! 🤦‍♀️🤣

We were so busy looking after our patients that we didn’t get a chance to take any photos! 📸

And, as it turns out, a few members of our team didn’t quite get the memo about wearing pink in time! 🤭💕

So, we’ve decided… WE’RE DOING IT ALL AGAIN NEXT FRIDAY! 🩷🎉

Even better, our Wear It Pink fundraising pack arrived today, so we’re hoping to find a wee bit of time to decorate the practice and really get into the pink spirit! 🎀💗

After all, it’s for a fantastic cause, raising money and awareness for Breast Cancer Now, a charity that supports those affected by breast cancer and funds vital research.

So, apologies for the lack of photos today, but hopefully next Friday we’ll have a sea of pink (and a few willing models!) to share with you all! 📸🤣

It’s time to add a splash of pink to Lour Road Group Practice! 💕

Today, Friday 23rd October, the Lour Road Team are proudly taking part in Wear It Pink Day to raise money for Breast Cancer Now! 🩷

From pink tops to pink accessories, we’re brightening up the practice for a very important cause! 💗

Breast cancer affects so many lives, and today we’re showing our support for everyone who has faced a diagnosis, is currently going through treatment, or has been affected by breast cancer in any way. 💕

By wearing pink and raising funds, we’re helping Breast Cancer Now continue their incredible work in research, care and support.

🧶💕 A LITTLE STITCH OF KINDNESS GOES A LONG WAY! 💕🧶

Our Health Visiting Team here at Lour Road Group Practice would like to say a HUGE thank you to the wonderful Chatty Crafts Group for their recent generous donations of beautifully handmade baby hats, blankets and jumpers. 👶🍼💗

Just look at some of these gorgeous creations! 😍

Every stitch has been made with care, and these thoughtful gifts will be very much appreciated by the families and little ones who receive them. 💕

🧶 A LITTLE BIT ABOUT CHATTY CRAFTS…

The group meets every Tuesday afternoon and enjoys getting together for a blether while knitting and crocheting.

Whether you’re an experienced knitter, love to crochet or have always fancied giving it a go, you’d be very welcome to pop along!

🩷🎀 WE’RE WEARING IT PINK! 🎀🩷

This Friday, 23rd October, the Lour Road Group Practice Team will be adding a splash of pink to our working day! 💕

We’ll be taking part in Wear It Pink Day to raise money for Breast Cancer Now, a fantastic charity supporting people affected by breast cancer.

From pink tops to pink accessories (and possibly some questionable fashion choices! 🤭), our team will be doing their bit to help raise awareness and vital funds.

💗 Why are we doing it?

Breast cancer affects so many people, whether through their own diagnosis or that of a loved one. By wearing pink, we’re showing our support for everyone affected while helping to fund life-saving research and essential support services.

Yesterday, we introduced Nicola, our Senior Pharmacy Technician. Today, it’s time to meet another important member of our pharmacy team…

💊 HOW DID MEGAN GET INTO PHARMACY?

Megan’s pharmacy journey began in 2020 when she started working as a Saturday girl at Lloyds Pharmacy.

Fast forward a few years, and Megan qualified as a pharmacist just last year! 🎓👏

Since then, she’s been putting her knowledge and skills to good use, helping patients get the most from their medication.

💚 WHAT DOES MEGAN ENJOY MOST ABOUT HER JOB?

Megan loves the problem-solving side of pharmacy!

She enjoys being challenged, working through complex medication issues and, most importantly, the satisfaction of knowing she’s helped a patient.

And just like Nicola, Megan enjoys being part of the Lour Road Group Practice team! 🥰

🤔💊 SO, WHAT DOES A PRACTICE PHARMACIST ACTUALLY DO?

Yesterday, we shared just how much our pharmacy technicians do behind the scenes.

Well, Megan is involved in many of those same activities!

From answering medication queries and carrying out medication reviews to helping with prescription synchronisation, medication shortages, alternative formulations and supporting patients who struggle to manage their medicines.

Our pharmacy team also acts as an important link between hospitals, community pharmacies and general practice, working closely with GPs, nurses, carers, care homes and other healthcare professionals.

But as a Practice Pharmacist, Megan also brings additional clinical expertise to the team.

🔎 LET’S TAKE A CLOSER LOOK!

💊 Drug interactions – Checking whether different medicines can safely be taken together and identifying potential interactions.

🧩 Complex medication queries – Using her clinical knowledge to investigate more complicated medication issues and help find safe, appropriate solutions.

🏡 Care home medication reviews – Reviewing residents’ medication to ensure treatments remain appropriate, effective and safe.

📋 Medication reviews – Looking at patients’ medicines to identify potential problems, unnecessary treatments or opportunities to improve their care.

💡 Medication advice – Supporting patients and healthcare professionals with questions about treatments, side effects and medication safety.

💚 MORE THAN JUST PRESCRIPTIONS!

There’s a lot more to being a pharmacist than dispensing medication!

Practice Pharmacists play an important role in patient safety, helping ensure medicines are prescribed appropriately and that patients receive the best possible treatment.

Much of this work happens quietly behind the scenes, but it makes a real difference to patient care every single day.

Nicola began her pharmacy career 18 years ago as a Pharmacy Assistant at Stracathro Hospital.

She qualified as a Pharmacy Technician in 2012 and has since gained a wealth of experience working in various roles across hospitals and primary care throughout Dundee and Angus.

💚 WHAT DOES NICOLA ENJOY MOST ABOUT HER JOB?

Nicola particularly enjoys supporting patients to get the best from their medication while helping to ensure prescribing is safe, effective and cost-efficient.

She also loves feeling part of the Lour Road Group Practice team! 🥰

Our pharmacy team works behind the scenes every day, helping patients, clinicians and other healthcare professionals.

🔹 Medication shortages – Working to find suitable alternatives when medicines are unavailable, including dealing with supply issues affecting holiday medication requests.

🔹 Prescribing projects – Working on initiatives to improve prescribing safety, quality and efficiency.

🔹 Alternative medication formulations – Reviewing options such as liquid medicines for patients who experience swallowing difficulties.
