REAL DOULA TALK
I think almost everyone says the same thing when I tell them what I do…
Your job must be so special, getting to meet all those beautiful newborns. And it really, really is.

But there is another side to this work that you don’t always see from the outside.
I’ve had the most INSANE week. Two babies welcomed earthside, both in completely different circumstances. One arriving much later than expected, the other earlier.
What happens behind closed doors during weeks like this is the bit that I think only other doulas really understand. The juggling, the waiting, the uncertainty.

The rollercoaster has been real! Navigating my own tiredness, my own emotions (Ozzie has been away for a week in Los Angeles all by himself!) and somehow finding the grace to put all of that to one side and show up. Fully.
Because when you walk through that door, your client needs you. They need the calm, grounded, safe person who can hold the space for them.

And that takes a village. This week I have been so incredibly held by my beautiful colleagues, Amber Strong and Clair | Doula, Antenatal Workshops, Trauma Recovery The kind of holding that happens quietly behind the scenes. The check-ins. The “are you ok?” messages.
I’m so grateful for you both.

And then there was theatre.
Sometimes birth doesn’t follow the plan. Sometimes the birth you thought you were going to support looks completely different. And this week I found myself in theatre.
Musgrove Park Hospital are absolute legends I know bot every local hospital routinely allows, two birth partner’s. It made such a profound difference.
I wasn’t thinking about the fact that we were in theatre. I was simply there. Holding her hand. Reminding her that she wasn’t alone.

And I think that’s perhaps the part of being a doula that is hardest to explain.
Yes, I get to meet the babies.
And yes, it is one of the most extraordinary privileges in the world.

Yet sometimes, behind the photographs of beautiful newborns there is a very tired doula in scrubs, driving home after a long night, feeling everything.

This work is beautiful.
But it is also a lot.

I’m feeling very excited and honoured to be part of ‘My Birth, My Voice’ this September, where some of my birth photography will be shared as part of this beautiful exhibition.

Birth is such a huge, powerful and deeply personal experience, and I feel incredibly lucky that people invite me into these moments and trust me to tell a little part of their story through my photographs.

As part of the exhibition, I’ve also been asked to make a short video sharing a little bit about who I am, what I do and why birth photography means so much to me. It feels really special to have the opportunity to talk about the work behind the photographs, as well as share some of the images themselves.

A huge thank you to and .art.of.sarah.slaughter for inviting me to be part of this. I’m really looking forward to seeing all of the different stories, voices and forms of birth art brought together in one place.

If you’re nearby, come and have a wander around. I’d love to see you there!

A VBAC at home sits outside NHS guidelines. That’s a fact. But so does the fact that Annie researched, questioned, and advocated fiercely for herself long before that first surge came. And when her baby arrived faster than any of us expected, before we even had time to catch our breath, her body just knew. It did exactly what she’d trusted it to do all along. It’s not reckless. It’s informed. And it’s her right. I am so honoured to have been in that room, witnessing one of the most powerful, fast, and breathtaking births I’ve ever seen 💛✨

What if we choose to align with positivity and joy in birth. How different could our experience be??

Society, television shows, and movies portrays childbirth as an inherently awful, painful, and dangerous experience. For generations, Western culture has perpetuated the idea that labor is an agonising, traumatic event that must be endured.

Where is the perspective that says normal, straightforward, or empowering births are possible!?

A combination of cultural conditioning, the medicalisation of birth, media sensationalism, and historical narratives equate pain with safety.

What if we choose to move away images of women screaming in pain, lying on their backs, and in need of rescue.

Because what we do know is- what you focus on, is what you feed. If you are feeding the doubt or uncertainty that it’s going to suck, then guess what, it will!

But if you nurture the possibility that it will be positive thats the hardwork, thats the heart-work.
Birth can absolutely be beautiful 🤍✨
