How is Somatic Yoga different?

It’s less about how a movement looks & more about how it feels from the inside.

🌿 Slower movement
🌿 Small, gentle movements
🌿 An inward focus
🌿 Less instruction, more invitation
🌿 No pushing through

Somatic Yoga can be especially supportive if you:
➡️ carry chronic tension or persistent pain
➡️ feel stressed, disconnected or stuck in your head
➡️ find yourself pushing through rather than listening to your body
➡️ have practised yoga for years but feel stuck in familiar patterns
➡️ want to feel more at home in your body

All you need is a willingness to slow down, listen & explore - & a desire to get to know yourself.

Wrote this post last year & I’m bringing it back to the grid today, because I still stand by all of it & I’d love for you all to know that yoga is not a brand, it’s not a 10 step product nor a quick fix. It’s also not something that anyone can own, it is for everyone; wherever you are in life, whatever your circumstances, yoga is there for you.

So be unapologetically you, practice in your pyjamas, in the kitchen when the kettle is boiling, for 1 minute before a meeting; you do not need to fit into a cookie cutter, one size fits all shape.

As Dolly would say “find out who you are and do it on purpose”

RIP Dolly ❤️

Hi, I’m Charlotte

If you’re new here, welcome.

I thought I would share a little about me & how I work.

I’m a certified yoga therapist & somatic movement therapist, with 15+ years of experience working with breath, movement, pain, stress & the nervous system.

My approach brings together somatics, therapeutic yoga, breath, mindfulness & neuroscience, creating space to slow down, notice what you’re experiencing & develop a deeper relationship with your body.

Rather than focusing on how a movement looks, we explore how it feels from the inside out.

This is at the heart of my Somatic Yoga classes.

What do you notice?
What do you feel?
What changes when you slow down?

There’s no need to be flexible, strong or experienced. My work is gentle, exploratory & adaptable to where you are.

If you’re looking for a space to feel calmer, more grounded & more connected, you are in the right place & I’m so glad you’re here.

Let’s begin gently.

Come HOME to your body | A Somatic Approach to Yoga

Put a Spring in Your Step & Jump Around

Your body is designed to respond to rhythm, bounce & gentle pulsing.

A little bounce can help calm the nervous system, hydrate & stimulate the fascia, improve circulation, wake up proprioception (your sense of where you are in space), & restore the body’s natural elastic recoil.

You may think of movement as stretching or strengthening, but your tissues also thrive on elasticity.

Fascia is a tensile, spring-like network that stores & releases energy with every step you take. When you move with rhythm & rebound, you help restore the body’s natural capacity to absorb, store & release energy with ease.

A simple tail wag on all fours.

It might look like an easy movement, but there’s a lot going on.

In Anatomy Trains, Thomas Myers describes the Lateral Line - a continuous line of fascia & muscle that runs up the outside of the body, from the foot, along the outer leg & hip, through the side waist & ribs, & into the neck.

Rather than creating movement, its primary role is to help us organise balance & stability.

1️⃣ Start on all fours.
Bring your knees slightly closer together & lift your feet. Then let your feet swish gently from side to side, like the wag of a tail or the swish of a fish.
Can you find an easy rhythm? Where does the movement travel? You might notice your weight shifting, your ribs softening, your neck releasing, or simply a greater sense of connection from head to toe.

2️⃣ Then transition into a variation of Child’s Pose.
As your feet continue to move from side to side, gently send your tail back towards your heels. Allow one foot to cross over the opposite ankle as you move.
As you travel back & forth, can you notice the natural springiness & elasticity of your tissues?

Rather than trying to stretch the Lateral Line, you’re giving it an opportunity to sense, adapt & respond.

What happens when you follow a small yawn?

Could it become the doorway into a deeper breath, stretch, release?

Could it be an invitation to listen?

What if a yawn is not something to hide, but something to follow?

Could you allow a small yawn to ripple through the body?

A small yawn. A subtle impulse to follow. A moment to listen.

To slow down in order to notice more…….

For years I’ve known people who have spent countless hours exploring the workings of their minds, yet have never really felt at home in their bodies.

I’ve also known people who have devoted themselves to exploring their bodies, yet rarely paused to understand the stories, beliefs & patterns shaping their experience.

What continues to fascinate me about a somatic approach is that it doesn’t ask us to choose one over the other.

It invites us to put our brain into our body & our body into our brain.

To get curious
To notice
To trust
And subsequently to have a choice

It’s a conversation between top-down & bottom-up processing. Between cognition & sensation. Between thinking & feeling.

It is my belief that this kind of process is best supported in relationship, fundamentally we are relational beings & we don’t always see our patterns clearly.

Sometimes we need someone to walk alongside us, to reflect, to hold space, to help us stay with what’s emerging.

So my invitation to you all is to find that person for you, someone who will guide you, hold you & show up for you with steadiness, softness & heart.

The pause before the practice.

Every class I teach begins here.

Most of us arrive carrying the momentum of the day. Before we move, stretch or strengthen, there needs to be a moment to arrive.

Lying with the knees bent & feet on the floor creates the conditions for the body to soften. The nervous system begins to settle. Breathing becomes easier. We begin to notice what we’re bringing with us.

I don’t think of Constructive Rest as a warm-up.

It’s the pause before the practice, where the body gets to arrive before anything is asked of it.

Donna Farhi says that fifteen minutes of Constructive Rest is a complete practice in itself. If that’s all you have time for, it’s enough.

As the summer holidays approach, I’d like to invite you to consider where you might create a few moments of pause in your own day or week. They don’t need to be long. Sometimes, simply giving yourself permission to stop is enough.
