Meet Sandy – PAT Dog Owner and Handler
Sandy has enjoyed a diverse and rewarding career spanning nursing, education and volunteering, always driven by a passion for helping others.
Sandy began her professional journey with the Queen Alexandra Royal Army Nursing Corps, training to qualify as a nurse. She then undertook a further year of study in midwifery and worked in nursing for seven years before a serious injury unfortunately brought her clinical career to an end.
Determined to pursue a new direction, Sandy studied at University College London and obtained a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree. This enabled her to teach mathematics in secondary schools for nine years before later retiring from teaching and moving into the hospitality industry.
Since joining the Pets As Therapy (PAT) Charity in 2006, Sandy has dedicated much of her time to volunteering within the NHS, visiting hospitals, particularly mental health settings. For many years, she was a valued member of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) team, working with children experiencing dog phobia and helping them build confidence around dogs.
Sandy has also been actively involved in the “Read to Dogs” programme in primary schools and has worked closely with local schools specialising in supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), an area of particular interest to her.
A few years ago, Sandy and two of her PAT dogs were invited to participate in research at the University of Lincoln, exploring canine behaviour and the benefits dogs can bring to children, particularly those experiencing mental health challenges. The resulting research has provided significant evidence of the positive impact that dogs can have on children's wellbeing and development.
Through her varied career and extensive volunteering work, Sandy continues to make a meaningful difference to the lives of children, patients, and the wider community, supported by her dedicated therapy dogs.
We are looking forward to seeing the Chat and Pat sessions develop in practice, they are held every Tuesday between 10.30 and 11.30am.
