🌧️ An early (and very wet!) start for Shona this morning, heading into an 8am meeting with the .org Council as part of her role as Secretary for the Association of Independent Hearing Healthcare Professionals.

A little job with a big title! 😊

And although we definitely didn’t spend the meeting discussing the weather, the Council call certainly covered some ground with members joining from Selkirk to Yorkshire, and all the way down to London and Cornwall. 🌍

AIHHP is a professional association dedicated to promoting excellence within the UK hearing care profession. Our members provide a range of specialist services, including hearing assessments, hearing aid provision, hearing protection and other hearing-related services that you may not typically find on the high street.

We’re delighted to introduce Carol, the newest member of our Hearing Care team.

From 24th September, Carol will be carrying out our ear wax removal appointments, taking over from Andrew.

Carol comes to us with a background in NHS nursing, many years of experience caring for people, and a wealth of knowledge and experience within healthcare. We’re delighted to have her join the team and are confident that our patients will be in safe, caring and experienced hands.

Prefer to see Andrew?
Andrew will continue to offer ear wax removal appointments on Thursdays, so if you’d prefer to continue seeing Andrew, appointments can still be requested.

Barbara is one of the kindest people you could ever meet, with such a wealth of knowledge, experience and helpful advice to share. 🌷

💙 Meet Barbara, Communities Connected's Dementia Specialist 💙

Our Coffee and Chat with a Dementia Specialist sessions are led by Barbara Bertram, Communities Connected's dedicated Dementia Specialist.

Barbara has spent many years in nursing, having begun her career at just 16 years old. A registered nurse with a wealth of knowledge and experience, she has been part of the QME Care team since 2019 and is passionate about supporting people living with dementia and those who care for them.

Dementia is Barbara's specialist area, and she is committed to ensuring that individuals and families have access to the support, understanding and guidance they need to live well with dementia. Alongside her work with Communities Connected, Barbara delivers dementia training within QME Care and throughout the wider community, helping to raise awareness and improve standards of care.

Barbara's dedication was recently recognised when she won the Workforce Development Award, celebrating her exceptional commitment to developing staff potential and creating an inspiring learning culture.

Whether you are living with dementia, caring for a loved one, or simply want to learn more, our Coffee and Chat sessions offer a warm, welcoming space to ask questions, share experiences and gain expert advice from Barbara.

Our next session is Tuesday 29th September at 1.30pm in QME Care, Kelso

Today, Shona was out on a home visit at a care home, where she spent time training the care staff on supporting residents with their hearing needs and helping them get the most from their hearing aids.

It’s all part of providing personalised hearing care, not just for our patients, but also helping the people who support them every day.

And on the way home, Shona was treated to this beautiful view. A lovely end to a rewarding day!

Your hearing health matters to us

We’re pleased to share the BIHIMA Red Flag Campaign, which highlights some important signs that shouldn’t be ignored when it comes to your hearing and ear health.

We know it can be easy to put changes in your hearing down to getting older, or to hope that a problem will simply go away. But some symptoms can be a red flag and may need further assessment.

🚩 Sudden changes in hearing
🚩 Hearing loss in one ear
🚩 Persistent or one-sided tinnitus
🚩 Dizziness or balance problems
🚩 Ear discharge or other unusual symptoms

If you’ve noticed something that doesn’t feel quite right, please don’t worry — but don’t ignore it either. We’re always happy to listen, answer your questions and help point you in the right direction.

Please take a look at the BIHIMA campaign and, if you know someone who might benefit, share this post with them. You never know who might need that little reminder to get their hearing checked.

We had a roof leak last Thursday… but our brilliant landlords were down the very next day to fix it! 👏 👏
