One thing I would love to normalise within the wellness industry is clients feeling confident enough to ask their massage therapist about their training, qualifications and experience.
Massage therapy is a hands on skill that involves much more than simply learning a sequence of movements. A good understanding of anatomy, physiology, contraindications, client care and practical experience all play an important role in providing safe, effective treatments.
When I first looked into training, I remember feeling really confused by the huge difference in course lengths- from weekend courses to programmes lasting many months... yet they offered the same level of qualification. For me personally, I wanted a deeper understanding of the body and to feel truly confident in the work I was doing, which is why I chose a longer, more in-depth route.
Now, almost 10 years into this industry, Iβve spent countless hours continuing to learn, develop and refine my skills through further training, hands-on experience and ongoing education - because I believe the learning never really stops in this profession.
Clients should never feel awkward asking questions about a therapistβs background, training or approach. Feeling safe, informed and comfortable with the person treating you is important. π€
