June is Communication Access Month.

Communication is a human right and doesn’t have to be earned.

Every child deserves a voice - whatever form that voice takes.

Throughout the month, we'll be sharing insights on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), speech and language therapy, communication support, and the ways we help children and families build confidence, connection, and understanding!

06/06/2026

If your child struggles to communicate, whatever that may look like, our upcoming Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Workshop is designed to give parents and caregivers practical tools, strategies, and confidence to better support communication.

Date: on Monday 15th June
Time: 7pm–9pm
Venue: The Muir Practice, Burnfield House, 4 Burnfield Ave, Giffnock, Glasgow G46 7TL
Cost: £40 per person

Whether your child uses AAC already or you're just beginning to explore communication supports, this workshop will provide valuable guidance you can take away and use straight away.

We'd love to see you there! 🌟

Like many people, the pandemic had a significant impact on Will’s confidence and communication.
Following lockdown, Will became quieter, more withdrawn, and less comfortable interacting with others.
Through tailored one-to-one support and later group sessions, therapy focused on rebuilding his confidence, communication, and social interaction skills at a pace that worked for him.

Over time, both his family and those around him noticed a real change.

Will became more confident in conversations, happier to socialise, and more comfortable expressing himself again.

Using Alex Kelly’s evidence-based ‘Talkabout’ programme, therapy supported self-esteem, conversation skills, friendships, and confidence in social situations.

Because with the right support, confidence can grow again!

Starting school is a big step — for children and parents 💙

Some children walk into Primary 1 chatting confidently and joining in with ease.

Others may need a little more support to build confidence with communication.

Being ready for school is about more than letters and numbers.

It is understanding stories.

Talking about experiences.

Answering questions.

Listening in groups.

Taking turns.

Feeling confident communicating with others.

That's why we are excited to be introducing something new at The Muir Practice…

✨ A Communication & Storytelling Group for children starting Primary 1 ✨

Play-based learning.

Stories, visuals and activities designed to support communication confidence before the move to school.

Signs your child may need support with narrative skills: "I know they know it… they just can't explain it."

We hear this from parents often 💙

Some children may find narrative skills more difficult.

You might notice:

• difficulty explaining what happened in their day
• missing important information from stories
• struggling with "why?" questions
• becoming muddled with sequencing ("first, then, next")
• finding group conversations difficult

Every child develops differently.

Needing support is not a sign something is "wrong" — it is simply recognising where we can help communication grow.

Early support can build confidence before children make the exciting move into Primary 1.

Why storytelling matters for learning before children learn to write stories…

They first learn how to tell them 💙

Storytelling helps children:

✨ organise their thoughts
✨ build vocabulary
✨ understand events in sequence
✨ answer questions
✨ develop confidence communicating with others

Narrative skills support learning right across the school day.

If your child struggles to explain what happened at nursery, misses out important details, or finds "what happened next?" difficult — they are not alone.

These skills develop over time, and support can make a real difference.

Starting Primary 1 is about so much more than recognising letters and numbers 💙

Children use communication skills all day long in school.

Listening to instructions.
Answering questions.
Taking turns.
Talking in groups.
Explaining ideas.

These are the building blocks for confidence, friendships and learning.

Some children find these skills come naturally. Others need a little more support — and that is okay.

Communication skills can be developed through play, stories, conversation and shared experiences.

Which of these do you think your child finds easiest? 👇

It’s SQA exam season, and for some young people, exams can feel even more challenging when dyslexia or language differences are involved.

What many parents don’t realise is that a formal assessment may help unlock additional support, such as extra time or other exam arrangements designed to reduce unnecessary barriers.

The right support can help young people feel more confident, better understood, and able to demonstrate their knowledge more fairly during exams.

Because access to support can make a meaningful difference when it matters most.
