Weight Loss and the Role of Insulin
Many people trying to lose weight focus mainly on calories, but hormones play a role too, especially insulin.
Insulin is a hormone that helps move sugar from the bloodstream into the body’s cells for energy. This is completely normal and necessary, but problems can develop when blood sugar and insulin are constantly being pushed up through frequent snacking, sugary drinks, ultra-processed foods, poor sleep, stress, lack of movement and a high carb diet.
Over time, constantly elevated insulin levels can cause the body’s cells to become less responsive to insulin. This is known as insulin resistance.
When insulin levels stay high for long periods, the body tends to prioritise storing energy rather than accessing stored body fat for fuel. This can make weight loss much harder, even when people feel they are “doing everything right”.
It can also contribute to:
• Increased cravings
• Energy crashes
• Hunger soon after eating
• Difficulty managing appetite
This doesn’t mean insulin is harmful. Healthy bodies naturally switch between burning sugar and burning fat throughout the day.
Small sustainable daily habits can help improve insulin sensitivity over time
• Walking more, especially after meals
• Resistance training
• Better sleep
• Reducing processed foods
• More protein
• Reducing constant snacking
When we get our insulin levels back to normal we are able to start burning fat for energy much more efficiently and weight loss can begin.
