Weight Loss and the Role of Insulin

Many people trying to lose weight focus mainly on calories, but hormones play a role too, especially insulin.

Insulin is a hormone that helps move sugar from the bloodstream into the body’s cells for energy. This is completely normal and necessary, but problems can develop when blood sugar and insulin are constantly being pushed up through frequent snacking, sugary drinks, ultra-processed foods, poor sleep, stress, lack of movement and a high carb diet.

Over time, constantly elevated insulin levels can cause the body’s cells to become less responsive to insulin. This is known as insulin resistance.

When insulin levels stay high for long periods, the body tends to prioritise storing energy rather than accessing stored body fat for fuel. This can make weight loss much harder, even when people feel they are “doing everything right”.

It can also contribute to:
• Increased cravings
• Energy crashes
• Hunger soon after eating
• Difficulty managing appetite

This doesn’t mean insulin is harmful. Healthy bodies naturally switch between burning sugar and burning fat throughout the day.

Small sustainable daily habits can help improve insulin sensitivity over time
• Walking more, especially after meals
• Resistance training
• Better sleep
• Reducing processed foods
• More protein
• Reducing constant snacking

When we get our insulin levels back to normal we are able to start burning fat for energy much more efficiently and weight loss can begin.

How Simple Breathing Techniques Can Help with Panic Attacks

Many people think panic attacks and anxiety are all in the mind, but because of the mind body connection, the body plays a huge role in creating and maintaining those feelings.

One of the fastest ways to influence the mind is through the breath.

A technique I often suggest to clients is taking two short inhales, followed by one much longer slow exhale through the mouth.

This helps because your nervous system has two main states.

The sympathetic nervous system controls your fight, flight or freeze response. When this state is triggered heart rate increases, breathing becomes more shallow than normal and muscles can tense as the mind scans and prepares for any potential danger (real or perceived).

The parasympathetic nervous system does the opposite. It lowers stress signals and communicates safety to the mind.

We move between these states as our subconscious minds decide whether we are safe or under threat.

When our breathing becomes rapid and shallow, the brain often interprets this as danger.

But when you deliberately slow the exhale, especially after those two smaller inhales, this mimics calming signals to the nervous system that says “We are safe enough to relax.”

This in turn can help interrupt the cycle of anxiety and help us focus on calmness.

Understanding Habit Patterns

A lot of people I speak to think their habit comes down to conscious willpower.

But when you look a bit closer, it’s actually more to do with the automatic part of our minds that we refer to metaphorically as the subconscious.

This is why when we try using willpower it can be difficult because it actively encourages thinking about the thing we want to stop doing.

With habits there will be a trigger - stress, boredom, time of the day or a situation and then the behaviour just follows. And it just happens before you’ve had time to even think about it. This is the subconscious taking control as it see's a habit or something we do often at certain times or places as necessary for survival, even if logically this is not the case.

And because it is a matter of survival the subconscious will have its way....always!

It is often referred to as the 'habit loop' and once a loop is established by repetition, it can feel like it’s “just what you do”.

Often but not always, the habit loops are established in childhood when we are still learning how to navigate the world. Some habits we learn from others.

These unhelpful or harmful loops do not need to continue, its just a matter of finding a tool that can reprogram that automatic part of your mind and remove or replace that old behaviour. This is why I use hypnosis to help clients communicate with that part of their minds and help make stopping or starting a behaviour more comfortable and easier.

Struggling to lose weight despite your best efforts?

One hidden factor you may not be aware of could be insulin resistance.

Insulin is the hormone that helps regulate your blood sugar. But when we regularly consume high amounts of sugar and refined carbohydrates, the body can become less sensitive to it. This is called insulin resistance and it makes it much harder for your body to burn stored fat.

Instead of using fat for energy, your body stays in “storage mode”, holding onto weight no matter how hard you try.

The good news? This can be improved by exercise and changing to a higher protein, lower sugar and refined carbohydrate diet. These measures can help your body rebalance insulin levels and return to burning fat more efficiently.

But it's the sugar cravings where many people struggle, for many people reducing their sugar intake is a daunting undertaking and just like many addictions, they feel as if its going to be either very hard or in some cases impossible. And this is where hypnotherapy techniques can help.

I work with clients to reduce sugar cravings naturally, using hypnosis techniques that make healthier choices feel easier to start and maintain and if weight loss goals are what you truly want for yourself then this is plausible and possible for you.

If you’ve felt stuck with your weight loss goals, it might not be about a lack of will, it could be about addressing what’s happening subconsciously beneath the surface.

Starting hypnotherapy can feel like a big step, especially if it’s something new to you or you’re not quite sure what to expect.

It’s completely normal to feel a bit unsure at first — many people I speak to have questions about how it works, whether it’s right for them, and what the experience will actually be like.

One thing I often hear is that people find it helpful to read through reviews before getting in touch, just to get a sense of other people’s experiences and whether they feel comfortable taking that next step.

Because hypnotherapy is such a personal process, feeling at ease with who you choose to work with really does matter. Trust, confidentiality and transparency are very much at the heart of my hypnotherapy practice.

If you’ve worked with me and feel comfortable sharing your experience, your words may help someone else feel a little more reassured and confident about reaching out.

I'd like to extend a big thank you to everyone who has already taken the time to share their experience, it is genuinely appreciated.

The Importance of Looking After our Liver

The liver, a vital organ in our body that is sometimes overlooked when we consider our health.
What the liver does:

- Filters Toxins
- Processes food into fuel
- Manages fat storage and metabolism

Fructose, when overconsumed, can contribute to fatty liver disease which is linked to weight and health issues, even in children.

Did you know that some everyday "healthy" choices might be quietly impacting your liver if consumed regularly? here are some examples which may surprise you:

- Fruit juices (especially orange, apple, “from concentrate”)
- Smoothies (even “green” ones)
- Flavoured waters / vitamin drinks
- Sports & energy drinks
- Granola and muesli (often coated in honey or syrup)
- Cereals (even bran or wholegrain varieties)
- Low-fat fruit yogurts
- Instant flavoured porridge
- Cereal & protein bars
- Dried fruit (raisins, dates, mango)
- Honey, agave syrup
- “Natural” snack packs
- Salad dressings (especially low-fat)
- Pasta sauces
- Ketchup & condiments
- Ready meals
- Frozen yogurt
- Fruit purées / kids’ pouches
- Vegan desserts (often high in syrups)
- Chocolate with added sugar

If it’s been processed, blended, or marketed as ‘low-fat’ or ‘healthy’, there’s a good chance sugar has been added and your liver is doing the hard work dealing with it.

Giving up fructose laden products can be a daunting endeavour for some people but it doesn't have to be. If this is something you are considering call me to find out more.

How Sugar Sabotages Weight Loss Goals

Have you noticed how sugar addiction can be just as tricky as any other habit?
Excess sugar in our diet puts stress on the liver and can eventually lead to insulin resistance. When this happens it becomes nearly impossible to lose weight and can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes-even in people who are at their recommended weight. The good news is that this can be reversed with new better choices regarding our diet and with exercise.
Clients often ask me to help with sugar cravings that sabotage their weight loss goals and just like any habit, hypnotherapy can help.
Using hypnosis, I help people address those subconscious patterns—whether it’s reaching for a sugary snack or getting motivated with exercise goals.
Combined with practical, sustainable lifestyle changes—including learning new things about nutrition, like what and when we eat—we make weight loss not only possible but sustainable.
If you’re ready to start making some manageable changes and discover a healthier path to wellness, give me a call.

Considering Therapy? Why Choosing the Right Person Is Key

Before we choose any service, most of us do the same thing, we check the reviews.

When it comes to therapy, this becomes even more important.

Reviews give us a window into real experiences. Not just what the service offers, but how it feels to work with that person. Do they come across as trustworthy? Professional? Approachable? Do people feel listened to and supported?

You’re not just buying a service — you’re placing trust in someone to help you navigate something deeply personal. Choosing the right therapist can make all the difference in the results you eventually achieve.

That’s why taking a little time to read through genuine client experiences can be so valuable. It helps you get a sense of whether someone’s approach and values align with what you’re looking for. Many people I’ve worked with have found it helpful to read the feedback shared on my Google page, where previous clients openly talk about their experiences.

If you’re currently struggling with anxiety — or know someone who is — it’s well worth exploring those insights before taking the next step.

And if something there resonates with you, it could be the start of real change.

Habits and the Dopamine Link

We all have addictions in one form or another. Any repeated action that spikes our dopamine and gives us a quick, easy 'good' feeling can become challenging to control.

When we repeatedly spike our dopamine and overstimulate our receptors, our baseline starts to drop. Then we need to increase the dopamine spikes to get back to baseline and beyond to get the same 'pleasure' response as before.

The good news is that everyone can reset it if they want to.

When we take a break from those habits, your dopamine levels and receptors start to regulate again, but this can feel uncomfortable. When cravings kick in, we can feel restless and low. That’s because our subconscious mind is still running the old behaviour pattern — it didn’t get the memo.

This is where hypnotherapy can really help manage those unconscious desires so your body can reset itself.

Instead of relying on willpower, hypnosis works with the subconscious mind to update those patterns, making the process feel easier and more comfortable.

Once things start to rebalance, you may notice:
• You enjoy the simple things more
• You feel more present
• You feel calmer, without chasing the next 'hit'
• Sleep improves, which will reduce anxiety

Ready to make that change and get back on track with what matters most? Call me.

Vitamin D & Magnesium — Vitamins that can potentially have a big impact on health

Most of us know Vitamin D and magnesium are good for us, but the way they work together is seriously underrated.

Vitamin D
Helps regulate mood, energy, immune function and even the way we respond to stress. Low levels are surprisingly common in the UK due to reduced daylight during winter and people staying indoors.

Magnesium
This vital vitamin supports sleep and muscle function.

Why They Work So Well Together
Vitamin D and magnesium support each other’s absorption and effectiveness. When both are topped up, people often notice:

Better sleep

More stable mood

Less stress and tension

Improved focus and energy

Stronger immune health

They’re not magic bullets, but they do create a healthier foundation for both emotional and physical wellbeing.

If you’ve been feeling low, tired, or “not quite yourself,” sometimes the simplest building blocks make a huge difference. There are a lot of useful resources online with more information on the subject. I can recommend Dr Berg's videos on You Tube as a good starting point.
