Testing is a huge part of how we determine your readiness to ready to return to sport/activity, and to minimise injury risk✅

Here’s Louise&physio student Johnny running through a variety of return to sport testing that we might carry out in the clinic🫡

Runners 🤝 Strength Training

Some key points we often discuss with runners about how to optimise (or start) their strength training so that they can keep running💪🏼

From stacking shelves to healing hands 📈

Today we celebrate 5 years of the big dawg, Craig 🎉🐕‍🦺

Robb introduced Craig to me with:

"This big dude who I played basketball with wants to do massage at our clinic and I've just convinced him to apply for a physiotherapy degree"

Craig was stacking shelves in Tesco at the Forge (RIP) and didn't come across as particularly confident despite his 6 foot 6 frame 🫈

Regardless, we brought him on board as our first ever team member and he hit the ground running.

Clients loved him instantly.

Professional, accomodating, and generally good natured. ✅

As Craig progressed through his Physiotherapy degree, he started shadowing us in the clinic with patients, asking us clinical questions, and eventually did one of his university placements with us.

I've worked for 12 years and NEVER come across a student who 'got it' as well as him 🤯

Then the conversation with Robb came.

"We can't bring Craig on as a physio straight out of uni can we?"

Oh yes the f**k we can.

And we did.

Now, Craig has proven himself as an exceptional clinician with better skills and knowledge than some physios I know who have been working for 10 years+

And he will only get better.

Robb and I are incredibly grateful to have you as part of the team and we're incredibly proud of the journey you've undergone ♥️

You're one of the good ones for sure.

Shoulder pain is a common one here in the clinic, and frequently the long head of the biceps tendon can be a source of pain!

It’s important to consider the role that these stabilisers play when training, or doing physical activity, and to look at the whole picture before creating an appropriate rehab/treatment plan⭐️

📝 Osbourne et al (2025)
⭐️ Calf raises are effective at loading the intrinsic and extrinsic foot and ankle muscles
⭐️ Adding 20% bodyweight of resistance increases muscle activation and joint torque
⭐️ Adding a forward lean increases these outcomes significantly and is effective to load the foot for its functional requirements in walking/running/jumping

Unclear if he's actually human, tests ongoing 🧐

Despite his ridiculous frame, Craig has proven to be one of the most empathetic and caring physiotherapists we've ever come across. That coupled with his clinical knowledge and skills, makes him a top physio providing the very best to our patients.

So this is more of an appreciation post for a health professional who is operating way above what would be expected.

Genuinely an incredible therapist and an integral part of our team that we're very lucky to have on board 🤝

He also takes the jibes about his height pretty well too (worse things to kick I guess?)

Who's going to live the longest in the clinic?

A 2024 study found that for every 5 kg reduction in grip strength, the risk of all-cause mortality increased by 16%, cardiovascular mortality by 17%, and stroke risk by 9%

We love outcome measures and their relationship with empirical evidence - would be rude not to see who's grip is the best.

So next time you're in the clinic - ask us to test your grip s

- we still need your score!

Proximal hamstring tendon pain is something that we see often in the clinic, and can be managed well with appropriate loading and advice💪🏼

Over complicating your return to training after injury?

Well after 12 years of getting people back to their best, these are the 3 fundamentals for a successful return:

1. Don't pick up where you left off

The classic mistake that we've all made.

"I was only out for a couple of weeks"

Two words for you - Graded Exposure.

Start small (no, smaller than that) and monitor your response to the session before incrementally increasing the load.

Be aware of any 'bumps' as you increase the load, drop back down by 10%, work at that level until it feels good, and THEN progress.

2. Measure effort

Hard to predict your likelihood of a setback if we don't know how hard we're working.

There's some really complex and interesting ways of measuring effort/recovery, but the evidence tells us the simple things work best.

Measuring your peak heart rate during the session and how quickly it comes back down afterwards will help guide your sessions alongside a good old RPE.

Your aim will be dependent on how long you've been out for and what you're aiming for - if in doubt, refer to point 1; start small, monitor response, and then build gradually.

3. Remember why you started

We've seen countless athletes over the years fall into a training/overload cycle that seems never ending.

This usually comes from a combination of ego and pressure.

Yes we all want to be back to our best as soon as possible, but overloading a deconditioned body will only make you sore and sad.

Refer to point 1 and 2, be patient and stop being so hard on yourself.

Bet you thought there'd be some flashy programming algorithm or a 'secret exercise' to cure all ailments right?

Yeah well physio, sport, and life in general doesn't really work like that. So tough diddies.

Hope this helps.
