Women on Wheels Hub

Women on Wheels Hub Women on Wheels (SCIO) is a community cycling hub for women. The world of everyday cycling is dominated by a white male demographic.

A service designed and led by women, we deliver a range of cycling activities to get women back on a bike or onto a bike for the very first time. It is much less common for women to cycling for transport and leisure, especially women of colour. Our mission is to empower and enable women to overcome their barriers to take up cycling - for transport, to improve their physical and mental health, and

most importantly, for the pure joy of it! Follow us on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/women_wheels/

Our Saturday Kids Learn to Ride Lesson swaps timeslot with one of our Family Cycling Sessions πŸ”„

Following feedback that several parents would appreciate to have the option for both a morning and afternoon slot for the Family Cycling Sessions while other parents prefer to keep kids' activities on weekend mornings, we've decided to swap the two sessions around.

Going forward our family activities on Saturdays will be:
9.30-10.30am - Kids Learn to Ride Lesson
10.45-11.45am & 3.30-4.30pm - Family Cycling Sessions

Any questions, just pop Katherine a message on [email protected]

If you'd like to sign your child(ren) or both/all of you up for a session, visit: https://book.plinth.org.uk/embed/org/n0r27GnqYoSbfMBSMnsG?showFilters=false&showHeader=true&tag=Family%20Cycling

SHE DID IT!!!πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

When most people turn 60 their first thought isn't "let me put my body through its paces and take on an Iron Man" but that's exactly what Ailsa - our awesome volunteer - decided to do.

At the Outlaw Original she completed 2.4miles of swimming, 112 miles of cycling and 26.2 miles of running in a modest 14 hours 26 minutes. What a LEGEND!

Please send her some good energy as she rests her legs and if you're able to, please consider donating to her fundraiser. She's raising money for Scotland's Charity Air Ambulance - SCAA and ourselves. You can do so here: https://www.goodhub.com/go/do-something-difficult-project-244054

It's almost time for our monthly 4-hour ride (which also means it's nearly August - where did time go?!?) and you are in for a treat this month πŸš΅β€β™€πŸš΅β€β™€

We are heading to The Saltings - a lovely nature reserve near Erskine Bridge. Look out for the beautiful wild orchids and many butterflies that call this grassland their home.

It's a social ride great for those wanting to go a little further but at an easy pace. We leave at 10am from our Hub and return at 2pm.

Find out who can benefit from our intermediate bike maintenance course πŸ”§

If interested there are a couple of things worth noting:
🚲 You need to be able to attend all four sessions on the following Sundays: 2 August, 9 August, 16 August and 23 August, 4-6.30pm.
🚲 To get the most out of the course, you need to have some basic bike maintenance knowledge (either from having taken part in our bike maintenance classes or from other experience). If you're unsure if you have the adequate knowledge, please email Holly on [email protected] and she'll be happy to help!

A 3-week block to boost your cycling confidence πŸš΄β€β™€

We are pleased to bring back another block starting Friday 14 August. This is a fabulous opportunity for those who already know how to ride a bike, but are feeling wobbly, lacking confidence or want to work on specific skills.

The block will be tailored to the small group of participants so everyone gets the most out of the sessions. However, the rough plan for the sessions is as follows:

πŸ”Έ Week 1 - Off road cycle skills in nearby park (Getting on and off the bike safely, signalling, turning, braking, gears and looking over your shoulder whilst cycling)

πŸ”ΈWeek 2 - Cycling skills in practice - using quiet residential streets we will practice gears, signalling, cycling with others and where to cycle on the roads

πŸ”ΈWeek 3 - Cycling skills in practice - using quiet roads we will progress previously learnt skills and look at rules of the road and how to cycle on very quiet roads/in low traffic

The cycling skills and confidence block is open to women and non-binary folks aged 16+ and the whole block is pay as you can Β£30-75 (Β£10-25 per session).

As spaces are limited we recommend booking as soon as you can via Plinth: https://book.plinth.org.uk/e/t3wX28iDWA69jadaYge1

If you have questions drop us a dm or email Holly on [email protected]

Less than a week till our brilliant volunteer Ailsa takes on the mammoth challenge of completing the Outlaw Original - a full on Iron (wo)man! 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle and 26.2 mile run - brutal!

To top it all off Ailsa is raising funds for Scottish Charity Air Ambulance and ourselves. If you're able to, go support her here: https://www.goodhub.com/go/do-something-difficult-project-244054

Want to take your bike maintenance skills to the next level? Ever dreamt about building a bike from scratch?πŸ”§πŸš²

That's exactly what we'll be learning at our Intermediate Bike Maintenance Course led by the brilliant Mhairi. We'll strip back the bikes (don't worry, not yours - ours!) and over the 4-weeks we'll learn how to put them back together.

The course runs over four Sundays in August: 2/8, 9/8, 16/8 and 23/8 from 4-6.30pm. You must be able to attend all sessions to take part in the course.
