Africa Health Research Organisation (AHRO)
The Africa Health Research Organisation (AHRO) was formed in 2002 after one of the founding Directors took part in a forum organised by DFID prior to the Barcelona AIDS Conference. During the forum, he identified the need for what he termed "A sort of visionary project whereby all African dedicated NGOs will be brought together to fight for complete new d

irections in addressing the African problem". AHRO Mode of Operation is therefore based on a very unique system of networking with its main Operational office in London, UK. The aims and objectives for which the organisation was established are:

1. To build a story network so that it can in collaboration with its partners intervene in emergency situations.

2. Mount educational awareness campaign in order to help the African people become informed.

3. Through its partners, help in the provision of drugs to poor communities in Africa.

4. Undertakes of scientific studies in order to develop better health treatment, diagnosis and case management protocol.

5. The organisation’s policy is based on a desire of maintaining its independence from any governmental influence which will allow the organisation to perform its function as a watchdog. Due to its unique networking structure, the AHRO uses a special arrangement.

OFFICIAL LAUNCH SPEECH BY PROF. ABUBAKAR YARO

President and Chief Scientific Officer, AHRO Institute

Launch of the AHRO Institute Strategic Plan 2026–2036

Distinguished guests, members of the Academic Board, esteemed colleagues, partners, friends of AHRO Institute, ladies and gentlemen,

It is with immense gratitude, humility, and optimism that I welcome you to this historic occasion as we officially launch the AHRO Institute Strategic Plan 2026–2036.

Today marks more than the unveiling of a strategic document. It marks the beginning of a transformative journey and the opening of a new chapter in the history of AHRO Institute. Across the world, leading academic and research institutions use strategic plans as roadmaps to guide growth, innovation, partnerships, and long-term impact.

When AHRO Institute was conceived, it was founded on a simple but powerful belief: that knowledge, innovation, and collaboration can transform lives, strengthen communities, and contribute to solving some of humanity's most pressing challenges. We envisioned an institution that would bridge research and practice, connect academia and policy, and empower individuals and organizations to create sustainable solutions for global development.

Today, that vision takes a significant step forward.

Our Strategic Plan for 2026–2036 provides a clear roadmap for the next ten years. It defines where we aspire to go, how we intend to get there, and how we will measure our success. Strategic planning is fundamentally about understanding where an institution stands today, where it wants to be in the future, and the actions required to bridge that gap.

The plan is built upon ten strategic pillars:

1. Research Excellence and Innovation
2. Academic and Professional Education
3. Climate Change and One Health Leadership
4. Public Health and Health Systems Strengthening
5. Natural Products and Traditional Medicine Research
6. Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence
7. Strategic Partnerships and Global Engagement
8. Institutional Sustainability and Governance
9. Capacity Building and Leadership Development
10. Knowledge Translation, Policy Influence, and Societal Impact

These pillars reflect our commitment to addressing contemporary global challenges while preparing future generations of researchers, professionals, innovators, and leaders.

Over the next decade, AHRO Institute will work to establish internationally recognized research programs, strengthen academic and executive education initiatives, foster multidisciplinary collaboration, and expand partnerships with universities, governments, development agencies, foundations, and industry leaders across the world.

We will particularly focus on areas where evidence-based solutions are urgently needed—public health, infectious diseases, climate resilience, One Health, digital health, artificial intelligence, natural medicines, and sustainable development.

Our ambition is not simply to generate knowledge but to ensure that knowledge leads to meaningful action. We want our research to influence policy. We want our educational programs to develop leaders. We want our partnerships to create opportunities. Most importantly, we want our work to improve lives.

Ladies and gentlemen,

The challenges facing our world today are interconnected. Climate change affects health. Health affects economic development. Technology influences education. Global crises demand multidisciplinary solutions. No institution can address these challenges alone.

That is why collaboration lies at the heart of our strategy.

We invite governments, universities, research institutions, development partners, philanthropic foundations, civil society organizations, and the private sector to join us on this journey. Together, we can build stronger systems, create innovative solutions, and expand opportunities for communities across Africa and beyond.

I would like to acknowledge the dedication of everyone who contributed to the development of this Strategic Plan. The document reflects extensive consultation, careful analysis, and a shared commitment to excellence. Successful strategic plans are strengthened through stakeholder engagement and collective ownership.

I also wish to express my profound appreciation to our Academic Board, Advisory Board members especially my special asvisor Prof Pranab , partners, supporters, and the AHRO Institute team whose commitment and belief in our mission have brought us to this important milestone.

As we launch this Strategic Plan today, let us remember that the success of any strategy is not measured by the quality of the document itself but by the actions that follow. The true test begins now—in implementation, accountability, innovation, partnership, and impact. Institutions launching strategic plans consistently emphasize that implementation, rather than the document alone, determines success.

The next decade presents enormous opportunities. We are entering an era where science, technology, innovation, and global cooperation will shape the future more profoundly than ever before. AHRO Institute intends to be at the forefront of that transformation.

Together, we will build an institution that advances knowledge, strengthens capacity, influences policy, fosters innovation, and contributes meaningfully to global development.

Together, we will create opportunities for future generations.

Together, we will transform ideas into impact.

I therefore have the honour and privilege to officially launch the AHRO Institute Strategic Plan 2026–2036.

May this strategic plan guide our collective efforts, inspire excellence, and serve as a catalyst for lasting impact in Africa and around the world.

Thank you very much for your support, your partnership, and your commitment to our shared vision.

God bless you all, and God bless AHRO Institute.

AHRO Institute Launches Annual Conference Series, Plans Rapid Expansion
Stevenage, UK — The AHRO Institute (Africa Health Research Organization’s academic arm) has officially unveiled its AHRO Conferences initiative, launching a programme of 12 academic and scientific conferences scheduled to run each year. This marks a strategic expansion of the institute’s research dissemination and global engagement activities.
The Director-General of the AHRO Institute, Professor Abubakar Yaro, stated that the current twelve events are part of a broader plan to strengthen exchange and collaboration in health research, education, and policy dialogue. According to Prof. Yaro:
“Our aim is to grow this annual portfolio from 12 conferences today to at least 100 by the year 2030, positioning AHRO as a leading convener of scientific discourse across multiple disciplines and regions.” (paraphrased)
Prof. Yaro emphasised that increasing the number of scientific gatherings is central to the institute’s mission of promoting evidence-based research and building scholarly networks globally — especially in areas such as global health, clinical research, and interdisciplinary studies.
The AHRO Conferences are designed to cover diverse themes each year, including infectious diseases, public health systems, clinical research innovations, climate and health intersections, and other priority areas in science and society. Organisers say that offering a regular series of events will help accelerate research collaboration, mentor emerging scholars, and connect policy-makers with cutting-edge scientific insights.
While the new conference calendar begins with 12 flagship events, Prof. Yaro and the AHRO leadership have outlined a strategic scale-up plan intended to build capacity, partnerships, and sponsorships that can support 100 conferences by 2030 — a ten-fold increase over the next few years. This growth is aligned with the institute’s long-term vision of broadening its influence in global academic forums and research ecosystems.
The AHRO Institute is already conducts research, publishing, and training activities across Africa and internationally, and the expanded conference initiative seeks to complement these efforts by fostering knowledge exchange and actionable research outcomes.
