Having a stroke can impact people in different ways – for many it can result in vision impairments. Vision issues after a stroke are common because much of the brain is involved in processing what can be seen through the eye. Having a stroke can affect individuals' independence and confidence, especially mobility and navigation. Individuals often face more barriers, especially if having to give up driving.
Visual field loss can make reading and navigation difficult. It can also place you at risk because of unseen objects and dangers. Some common examples include: Missing food to one side of your plate, knocking over unseen objects or even losing items within the home, such as keys and a mobile phone. At Visibility Scotland, we offer compensatory scanning training and support that can help to mitigate these hazards.
Driving is a key part of independence for many people, so losing the ability to drive after a stroke or sight loss can be difficult to adjust to. Visibility Scotland’s vision rehabilitation scanning programme for people affected by a stroke can support individuals in working towards the DVLA’s Exceptional Cases pathway. However, only qualified medical professionals can confirm whether the criteria has been met. This is usually assessed by a GP, optometrist or ophthalmologist during the next stage of the process.
Coming to terms with sight loss can be hard, whether you have recently been diagnosed or have been living with it for several years. From the latest assistive technology to rehabilitation training or a listening ear and wellbeing calls at the end of the phone, we’re here to help you access the right support, regain
confidence and independence.
