When we talk about creating safe spaces, it can be easy to think only about the room.

Is it private? Is it welcoming? Is it accessible?

Those things matter.

But safety is also created through how people are treated.

It is in the first conversation.
It is in the way questions are asked.
It is in whether someone is given choice.
It is in how clearly things are explained.
It is in whether people feel believed, respected and in control.

For survivors, safety is not always about one big gesture.

It can be built through small, consistent actions that show care, patience and understanding.

Trauma informed practice asks us to think beyond the space itself and consider the full experience of the person walking into it.

Because a safe space is not only somewhere people go.

It is something people feel.

Dinner with a little Cuban soundtrack? Yes please.

We're continuing to reveal what we have planned for the Thriving Fiesta, and joining us during the evening will be our Cuban singer.

There is a very deliberate reason we've packed the night with different entertainment.

We want this to feel like a celebration.

A night where people can come together, enjoy themselves and support the work of Thriving Survivors at the same time.

Good food. Great music. Plenty happening. And hopefully a full room at Arta.

Recovery can begin with one small step into a safe space.

The Bridge to Recovery programme at Thriving Survivors is a peer led activity group designed to welcome and support new survivors as they begin their journey.

For someone taking that first step, being met with understanding, connection and care can make a real difference.

Bridge to Recovery helps create that early sense of welcome and support.

From there, survivors may also take part in Discovering Me, a post-traumatic growth programme designed to inspire and empower.

Through fun, engaging and informative sessions, Discovering Me supports people to explore who they are, build confidence and reconnect with themselves beyond trauma.

Together, these services reflect something important:

Survivors are not defined by what has happened to them.

Support should also make room for growth, identity, confidence, connection and hope.

At Thriving Survivors, recovery is not about asking people to become someone new.

It is about helping them reconnect with who they are.

To learn more about Bridge to Recovery and Discovering Me, visit the Thriving Survivors website or get in touch.

Our Latin dancers will be joining us at the Thriving Fiesta, bringing even more energy to what is already shaping up to be a fantastic evening at Arta.

This isn't simply dinner followed by a bit of background music.

We want entertainment woven throughout the whole night.

From our Brazilian Carnival Welcome to Latin dancers, a Cuban singer and Latin DJ, there will always be something happening.

And we haven't even told you what the surprise ending is yet...

Recent discussion around reality TV and safeguarding has raised important questions about duty of care, participant welfare and what happens when personal experiences become public content.

End Violence Against Women commented on BBC Panorama’s investigation into serious failings involving women cast in Married at First Sight UK, calling for appropriate action on abusive behaviour whenever it is seen or reported.

Without commenting on individual cases, it raises a wider point.

Safeguarding cannot sit quietly in the background.

It needs to be active, understood and built into culture, not treated as a policy that only matters when something goes wrong.

That applies across media, workplaces, services, community spaces and organisations.

When people are being asked to share, participate, disclose, perform, relive or be vulnerable in any setting, the responsibility to protect their wellbeing matters.

A trauma informed approach asks:

What support is in place?

Who holds responsibility?

Do people know how to raise concerns?

Are concerns taken seriously?

What happens after someone speaks up?

Safeguarding is not only about risk. It is about respect, dignity and care.

How can organisations make sure people feel safe before, during and after they take part?

Most people working in services want to help.

But even well-intentioned systems can cause harm when they are confusing, inconsistent or difficult to access.

Long waits.

Repeated questions.

Unclear communication.

A lack of choice.

Poor handovers.

Not knowing what happens next.

Feeling passed from person to person.

For someone affected by trauma, these experiences can feel overwhelming and unsafe.

That is why trauma informed practice is not only about individual kindness.

It is also about looking at systems, processes and culture.

How easy is it to ask for help?

How many times does someone have to repeat their story?

Are people given clear information?

Are staff supported to respond well?

Are survivor voices shaping how services work?

Trauma informed change happens when we look at both the person and the system around them.

Counselling at Thriving Survivors offers trauma informed support for adults aged 18+.

These sessions provide clinical support in a confidential, non-judgemental space, with counsellors who have extensive training and experience in supporting survivors.

For many people affected by trauma, counselling can be part of a longer healing journey.

It can offer space to speak, reflect, process and begin to build the tools needed to cope with difficult thoughts, feelings and experiences.

But trauma informed counselling is not only about the session itself.

It is about safety.
It is about trust.
It is about choice.
It is about being met with care and respect.
It is about support that recognises the whole person, not just what has happened to them.

At Thriving Survivors, counselling sits within a wider pathway of support, helping survivors continue their journey in a way that feels right for them.

To learn more about counselling, visit the Thriving Survivors website or get in touch.
