Plants plants plants. We need to eat more plants.

The UK almost double the average meat consumption compared to the rest of the world. Averaging 226g per day much more than the recommend 70g per day.

With more of our calories coming from meat that means less is coming from plants that reduces our fibre intake dramatically.

Fibre is crucial for digestion and weight control. All plants contain fibre and help you feel full for longer.

Moral of the story eat more plants.

If you live in a city chances are you live in a concrete building surrounded by many other concrete buildings that are connected by asphalt roads.

We need to make the time to get back to nature. I’m sure it comes as no surprise that getting into the great outdoors is good for us.

We need to prioritise this time. Schedule outdoor actives in as often as possible. A simple change can be rather than running on a treadmill take it outside.

With it being winter in the UK at the moment and not being the friendliest weather. Another way to enjoy some of the benefits of plants through the winter months is with indoor greenery.

Studies have show that having indoor plants in your home or office can help reduce stress and anxiety as well as acting as a filter cleaning the city air we breathe.

For those that don’t know, the Blue Zones are populations that have been studied by many different scientific fields to help unlock the secret to their longevity.

These Blue Zones include
> Barbagia region of Sardinia
> Ikaria, Greece
> Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica
> Loma Linda, California
> Okinawa, Japan

On average the populations that call these Blue Zones home live on average 10 more years than the average Western.

The secret of their longevity success can be broken down in to a few categories.

Move Naturally- their day to day life integrates movement into their average day, eliminating the need for gyms.
Purpose- Many people in these zones have a purposes or a mission so they feel like they’re contributing to something bigger than themselves.
Down Shift- They know how to de-stress which reduces the risk of all age related diseases.
Plant Slant- Although these areas aren’t strictly vegan or vegetarian they consume the majority of their calories through grains and whole plants.
Belonging - Many Of the Blue Zone populations are religious or spiritual helping to ground them and provide a sense of belonging.
Family First- Many families keep elderly relatives close throughout their life, many times living in the same home.

Let’s talk about FIBRE...

In the UK the average female consumes 17 grams of fibre per day and men 20 grams per day this falls well short of the daily recommendation of 40 grams of fibre per day. It is crucial to include as much fibre in your diet as possible! Our gut microbes extract the fibre’s energy, nutrients and vitamins, including short-chain fatty acids, which can improve your immune system, decrease inflammation and protect against obesity.

The great thing about fibre is that it will help to keep you satiated for long periods of time. Saving you from the 3pm crash.

Fibre can be broken down into two different types soluble and insoluble.

Soluble - Helps to regulate blood sugar levels and protect against LCL cholesterol, lowering the risk of stroke and heart disease. This can be found in foods like oatmeal legumes and some fruits and veggies.

In-Soluble - Helps to have a cleansing effect on the digestive system, helping to “clean” the digest system allowing for increased nutrient intake. This can be found in whole grains, red kidney beans as well as some fruits and veggies.

Another important thing is to avoid consuming processed white grains, this can be white bread, white rice and white pasta. These foods have had the fibre stripped from them during the refining process to allow them to increase shelf-life.

Benefits of a high fibre diet include:
- normalised bowel movements
- maintains bowel and gut health
- lowers cholesterol
- assists in blood sugar stabilisation
