The hills I will die on…

No one teaches parents how to support their child’s emotional wellbeing. We teach feeding, safe sleep and weaning - but not anxiety, low self-esteem, big emotions or challenging behaviour. We should. And I’m on a mission to change that nationally.

We should teach children how their brains and emotions work before they’re struggling. We teach them to brush their teeth before they get cavities. Why aren’t we teaching them the skills to look after their emotional wellbeing in the same way?

Early intervention is everything. We need to stop waiting until children reach crisis point. Getting support at the first signs of struggle isn’t “making a fuss” or putting ideas into their heads. It’s giving them the tools they need before things get bigger.

And finally - working parents need better support. When your child is struggling, you don’t leave that worry at the door when you go to work. It affects your focus, your capacity and your wellbeing. If workplaces want to support their people, they need to support them as parents too.

These are the hills I’ll keep banging on about!

We often expect children to know how to behave, to remember whatever instructions we’ve given them before, to just show respectful behaviour because they ‘should’…behaviour has to be taught, just like anything else, through repetition, consistency and guidance. So think of whether you are actively teaching them how to behave…or if they are going into situations with a bit of an ‘empty bowl’ – here’s some advice on how to do this…with the added bonus of me nearly hitting myself in the face with a ball!

One of the biggest myths about childhood anxiety is that children simply grow out of it.

Sometimes they do.

But many don’t.

Instead, the anxiety changes.

The child who cried at nursery drop-off might become the teenager who says, “I’m fine,” while bottling everything up inside.

They might become the child who can’t find the words to explain what’s wrong.

Or the one who appears angry, withdrawn, perfectionistic or constantly overwhelmed.

Anxiety doesn’t always disappear.

It often becomes better hidden.

That’s why I’m so passionate about early intervention.

We don’t just want children to cope.

We want them to understand what’s happening in their brain, recognise their emotions and feel confident asking for help.We don’t need children to become better at masking their emotions. We need them to become better at understanding and communicating them.

I’m f you feel yourself about to shout try pressure your tongue gently against the roof of your mouth. Trust me there’s science behind it - this actually activated the parasympathetic nervous system which helps you calm down. It also helps regulate your breathing, which helps you calm further. A funny little tip that works surprisingly well!
