Dead Dolphins

Dead Dolphins From Scotland making the kind of noise that lands somewhere between a bar fight and a space trip.

We came from the ocean, we take from the ocean and give little back. The ocean feeds us, entertains us, calms us, inspires us, powers us, shapes our world and asks for nothing in return.

We sometimes meet individuals that we take for granted or who take us for granted as we will always be there, we will always give. Sometimes you find yourself trying to help someone or steer them away from a downward spiral or you’re regularly pulling them out of situation and habits they flow in and out of like the tide.

That can be tiring, that can be thankless. So, thank the ocean every once in a while and look after it.

Have you ever looked up at the night sky on a clear night, scanned your eyes across the stars and the moon and not be filled with wonder?

Sitting at around 240,000 miles from earth and drifting away approximately 4cm each passing year, that’s about as sciency as I can get. What fascinates me most is the primal wonder I get from staring into its glow. The moon has served as a source of wonder and significance since the dawn of humankind. Etches of the lunar phases have been found on bones dating back to the Stoneage.

July 20th 1969 was in the spotlight for one of mankind’s greatest achievements (let’s open that internet argument shall we?). Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins landed on the moon (well Collins didn’t, he just swung round the block a few times until the lads were done bouncing about).

The opening track from forthcoming debut album ‘Weightless’ talks of discovery. Voyages across vast unknown landscapes and spaces. An Astronaut discovering the shapes between the stars or a cowboy discovering new lands, it’s utilised the twang of a western with the echo of infinite space. You may not believe in the moon landing but I’m certain that its glow has provided many moments of aw for you all.

This album is our etching on bones.

Keep your eyes upon the moon, a few more orbits and soon…

Our track ‘Cave Licker’ from our forthcoming album has its name origins to Smoo Caves in the Norrh of Scotland.

As I mentioned before on a previous post the name of the band was spawned from a chat with a friend when doing the NC500. A comment was made about the colour and texture of the cave wall and from that the phrase “cave licker” was born.

Clearly the name implies a blatant euphemism and it does offer an image of a subservient service it in truth, no smoke and mirrors, is derived from a stupid conversation about an actual cave.

The song reflects on a changed mind set from a once subservient desire to serve another and into one that finds peace in the knowledge what you will or will not stand for anymore. Letting someone go that didn’t serve you in your true self but realising there are somethings that you simply cannot overlook what draws you to that person.

We’re equally at fault for our actions in how we interact with others. You show someone the colour red but you’re feeling blue they don’t see blue.

Lesson, be blue and show blue, be red and show red. Basically stop licking caves and be you in all your colours if you want to be seen.

Fairly certain that none of that will make any sense to anyone.

In a nutshell: debut album coming soon, tell your friends.

WAIT.

It’s Monday, this time next week we’ll be in the studio with Ross McGowan mixing the album, giving it the final spruce before it heads out the door. The final ruffle of the hair, checking we’ve applied our lipstick just so, not got any on our teeth, quick sniff of the pits, wallet, keys, fags… let’s fu**in go lads!

If any of you have siblings or have been anywhere near a crossing you’ll no doubt have seen how feral children get at the anticipation of being allowed to press the button. Fists thrown, claws and teeth out sunk into skin, the fight for the button is real.

We can only dream of such energy for the release of this album. But please… no biting, no tears and no fighting. Wait. Just wait a little longer, there will be enough to go around.

Oh, but I will say this. Because streaming sites may have their places, to fairly financially aid musicians is not one of them. So, our debut album will be available as physical media only… first. It will be available on Bandcamp to order on its release date as well as Europa Music

It will be a few weeks later that it’s available on streaming platforms. I would apologise but I’m not going to, It’s simply a matter of principle. So if you want to just listen to it (and that’s absolutely fine) you’ll have to WAIT.

“My old eyes look at you fresh.”

On our forthcoming debut album the track Uncle Sweet One takes inspiration from the story of vampires. The story goes that in the 18th century the Balkans were so genuinely terrified of vampires that the dare not speak its name, instead they would refer to them as “Uncle” or “The Sweet One”.

In Scottish folklore history the closest tale we have to vampires is that of the Baobhan Sith (pronounced baa-van shee). A bloodsucking, shapeshifting fairy from the highlands of Scotland.

We also have Slain’s Castle which inspired a young Bram Stoker who created probably the most famous vampire of all time… after The Count from Sesame Street obviously.

Consider this a countdown.

Scotland’s brooding landscapes have inspired artists and sound for years. Just as those landscapes are shaped by the elements around them so are we. Our sound isn’t traditionally Scottish but the musical landscape in Scotland is also shaped by the elements around us.

Our debut album is angular, dark and brooding like a Scottish mountain range but it’s also melodic, floaty and delicate like… a mountain fairy?

Keep yer eyes peeled for information hinting at the release date…

As all grassroots bands and artists will know, a lot of hard work goes on behind the scenes. Trying to breakthrough the noise to have your voice heard and promote your music and art is a challenge in itself and with so many top bands about doing the same thing. In our year and a half of hugging we’ve played with some top bands and awesome folk, building the community is exciting and It should never be seen as competition, we are all largely aiming for the same things.

We are gentlemen of a slightly older vintage but with that we have the benefit of having done this for a long ass time. Each of us forging different paths that has brought us together as the one entity, Dead Dolphins.

Our debut album is due for release October.

Some bands play for years before releasing an album, some do it before they’ve even stepped on stage(I’ve done both) There is no wrong way. The wrong way is not doing it at all.

We’ve done it and damn are we proud. The album is raw and we wanted it to echo the sound and feel of debut albums. Don’t over produce it, don’t tinker too much, be diligent it just Let it be. We are heading into the studio end of August to finish the mixes then it’s off to get turned into physical media.

We are so grateful to everyone we’ve worked with, played with, who’s put us on and who’s supported us and even higher thanks to those who repeatedly support us. You don’t know what it means.

We are gonna try find the time between life, work, families and all that to promote this and push it as best we can. The internet is a sea of advice on how to do it, it’s easy to get lost in it. We are just 4 guys, we don’t have financial backing or a label, we do this because we love it. So, We salute and praise all who help us in pushing this.

More gigs coming and debut album coming soon…

Greatest love, Dead Dolphins
