I used to think being a midwife meant I’d know exactly what to expect from my own births.

I didn’t. Not even close 😂

I’ve been the midwife in the room, and I’ve been the one in the bed, terrified and not sure what was happening to my own body. Both of those experiences shaped how I teach now.

I don’t just run through the facts with my classes. I tell people the truth, even the messy bits, because that’s what actually helps you feel ready. I’d be doing you a disservice otherwise!

I’m all about being realistic and honest with you and you’ll always have me in your corner. So let’s do this together!

If that sounds like the type of antenatal class you want to sign up to, let’s chat. Send me a message if you have any questions or if you’re ready to jump in and book, the link is in my bio 💕

If I were you, I’d save this one - you’ll want it in your back pocket!

You hear a lot of chat about how good breathing is for you in pregnancy and labour but you don’t always get told how to do it effectively so it properly benefits you. Well, until now!

I’ve got three techniques for you here - one for early labour, one for when your body is pushing and your baby is on its way, and the third one which is your “get me out of my head” button for whenever things feel like a lot in labour but also life in general (hello 3am panic spirals - I see you!)

The secret though is that you don’t wait to try them until the big day. You practice now, so when it counts your body knows exactly what to do with no thinking required!

Save this, try one today and let me know how it goes 🥰

Part 3 of pain relief options and this week we’ve got remifentanyl (Try saying that one after a sleepless night with a newborn)

It’s the pain relief option that hardly anyone seems to have heard of. Some people don’t even know it exists, never mind that it’s something they could actually ask for which is a shame, because it’s the one where you get a button. You press it yourself, timed to your contractions, so you’re the one in charge.

It kicks in quickly and wears off quickly too, which baby appreciates.

You will need close monitoring while you’re using it, and not every unit offers it (I know, I know), but it’s worth asking the question at your next appointment.

Everything you need to know is in the reel 😊

Had you heard of this as an option?

Nine months of prepping for the birth and life at home with your baby and the bit in between is very rarely mentioned. The postnatal ward.

The birth’s done, it’s 3am, your birth support is away home, you’re in a space and bed you’ve never seen before with a tiny person you met four hours ago, the staff are run off their feet because there’s never enough of them (not their fault - more the systems!) and you’re thinking “wtf am I supposed to do or expect now?”

Well, I’m going to tell you because you deserve to know about what to expect.

Slide 9 is the one to actually act on and slide 10 is the one I really need you to remember. Last slide has the tip I’d give my own sister (if I had one - but alas I am an only child!)

Mums who have been there - anything I’ve missed?

My lovely client said what a lot of you are probably thinking about pregnancy relaxation classes 😂
See to be honest, I do get it. It does sound a bit fluffy but let me give you a wee bit of reassurance. I’m a midwife - nothing I teach is airy fairy. I am all about teaching things that work.

My classes focus on breathing that works in labour (and in real life. Hell, I use it when I stand on the kids’ toys and my foot is killing me 😂), gives you practical stress tools and most importantly, an hour and a bit where nobody is asking anything of you.

My lovely client ended up actually saying that it was the first time in three years that she’d properly switched off. THREE YEARS.

I have 2 spots available for next week’s block in Newton Mearns south of Glasgow - link is in the bio to get your space and some peace 😂

The uterus - what an organ btw.

I know some of us who have periods might have a love/hate relationship with our uteruses (uteri? I googled it and apparently both are acceptable!) but I don’t think we give it enough credit for everything it does during pregnancy.

Going from the size of a pear, to a watermelon and back again in under a year.

Here’s part 2 of my “wild things that happen with your body in pregnancy” mini series. Next week: the cervix
