Introducing Stomach 36

Each week in Qigong class I introduce a pressure point or two, guiding people to take more control of their health and wellbeing as we move through each season.

What is the point?

ST36 tonifies Qi and Blood, harmonises and strengthens the Spleen and Stomach, raises Yang (energy), calms the Shen (spirit), activates the meridian (energy line), and stops pain.

Commonly used for gastrointestinal discomfort, nausea and vomiting, stress and fatigue, this point has a strong association with digestion, in traditional Chinese literature and practice, ST36 is frequently stimulated for health promotion and longevity. Some swear by its daily use for general wellbeing.

To use this as an acupressure point at home:

First locate the point (four finger widths down from bottom of knee cap, confirm the area by moving foot up and down). Use your thumb or index finger to massage the acupoint with deep and steady pressure. Massage the point in a circular or up and down motion, maintaining contact with the skin. Massage the point for one to two minutes. Be aware of keeping a slow and steady breath during application, we have a tendency to hold our breath in these situations.

Legend has it;

Chinese warriors would wear leather sashes with stones hanging from either side of their waist while they hiked across the vast countryside to protect their nation. When the warriors became exhausted, to the point where they just couldn’t go any further, they would kneel down to rest. The stones would naturally land at Stomach 36 on each leg. Upon arising from this bended knee position, with pressure on Stomach 36, when the soldiers arose they found extra hidden renewed strength and were able to hike “three more miles”… hence the name Leg Three Miles.

Note: Usage of this point shouldn’t replace an acupressure or acupuncture treatment but act more as a way of supporting your system on an ongoing basis, empowering you to really get to know your body, to feel how different points work on YOUR body. Prevention and longevity lie at the core of Qi Gong and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
