Many people suffer from side effects, such as nausea and constipation, when first taking weekly injections for weight loss/improved diabetic control. The Gloucestershire Community Diabetes team, have shared some tips to help you.
Nausea, reflux and constipation are common in the early weeks of GLP-1 treatment, and they can affect how much and what you eat.
A few food-based strategies may help:
For nausea:
✅ Eat small, frequent meals.
✅ Avoid high-fat, greasy or very spicy foods.
✅ Try cold or room-temperature foods.
✅ Keep meals bland after dose increases.
For constipation:
✅ Prioritise fibre-rich foods.
✅ Drink 1.5–2 litres of fluid daily.
✅ Try prunes, kiwi fruit or ground linseeds.
✅ Gentle walking after meals may help.
For reflux:
✅ Eat slowly.
✅ Avoid lying down within 2–3 hours of eating.
✅ Limit caffeine, alcohol and carbonated drinks.
Speak to your healthcare team if symptoms persist or become severe.
