What do I actually do? 👀
I don’t just find the bit that hurts and massage it.
I look at how your body is moving and whether muscles are sitting in a shortened or locked-long position.
The locked-long muscles are often the ones that feel tight, tender or uncomfortable. I can work on these areas with massage to help reduce tension and discomfort and you may feel better for a few days.
But I don’t just want to treat the sore spot.
I want to understand why it’s become overloaded in the first place.
When a muscle becomes shortened and restricted, it can affect how other areas of the body move, creating compensations elsewhere.
For example, restricted muscles around the hip can change how your pelvis and legs move, causing other muscles to work harder to compensate. Overtime these compensations can lead to injuries.
So yes, I could just massage the area that hurts and make it feel better temporarily…
…but if we don’t address the underlying movement pattern, there’s a good chance the same problem will keep coming back.
That’s why I also work on the shortened muscles by using hands-on techniques, movement and education to help improve mobility and rebalance how the body is working.
And this takes time.
If your body has adapted to the same movement patterns over months or years, we can’t expect to change everything in one treatment. That’s why working together over a period of time can be so valuable.
Whether you’re training regularly or doing repetitive movements every day - running, lifting, building, cleaning or sitting at a desk - your body is constantly adapting to what you ask of it.
Sports massage isn’t just about making something feel better today. It’s about understanding your body, improving how you move and helping you stay ahead of those compensations to help prevent injuries from happening.
