Boxwell with Leighterton - continued

The school was opened in 1871, but now stands empty as a new school was opened, just outside the village, in 1907.

Leighterton has some beautiful stone buildings, including Church Farm, dated 1733. It has a dovecote and a lantern on the roof. With
thanks to Elizabeth Jack for the picture.

Boxwell with Leighterton - continued

Some Gloucestershire parishes have a history that is easily available, whether by amateur locals or historic journals. Others, like nearby Didmarton, or Boxwell with Leighterton obviously have a fascinating history, but nobody seems to have gathered it. Even British History online hasn't covered it (yet),

So, if anyone could tell me more, I would be very grateful.

This is the Royal Oak, a pub in the village which seems to have been built in the 19th century. It is still open, and serves excellent food.

Due to the red weather alert issued for Thursday and the risk the heat imposes on our health, we have decided to again postpone the in-person event on 13 August at the Heritage Hub, Gloucester. This was David Cook's talk which we were holding jointly with the Friends of Gloucestershire Archives. We will therefore look forward to hearing his talk about the birth of Staverton Airport at a later date. Apologies that this is the second time we have had to postpone this talk.

10/08/2026

Talks are free of charge and there is no need to book. Everyone is welcome to attend, so make sure to write the date in your diary!🛩🗨

Boxwell with Leighterton - continued

Most people drive past the Aerodrome Garage, on the busy A46, without a second glance.
Its history belies its uninteresting appearance, however. It is the last remaining part of Bowldown Airfield. St Andrews church, in Leighterton, memorialises the 24 young Australian personnel who lost their lives during training, and the churchyard contains the immaculately maintained graves of personnel who lost their lives during training . The stone memorial is on the roadside, next to the garage.

Every year, a commemoration service takes place in the village.

Our next on-line talk will be on Wednesday 12th August, on Transport to Tasmania.
Kelly Cornwell will show how exploring English and Australian records can help you discover more about your female convict ancestors; demonstrated via the case study of a young girl from Shoreditch, her conviction, transportation and ensuing escapades in Tasmania.

The picture is of HMS Clyde, which was used as a transportation vessel.
