What a fantastic evening we had at the Telegraph & Argus Business Awards last Thursday!

We were incredibly proud to be among the final three finalists for the Family Business of the Year award! Although we didn't win on the night, being recognised as a finalist is something we're really proud of.

As a family business, this recognition means a lot. It's a reflection of the hard work, commitment and care that each and every one of us puts into the business every day. We genuinely love what we do, and we're so grateful to our amazing clients who continue to put their trust in us.

It was also a brilliant evening celebrating so many successful local businesses, meeting some lovely people, and sharing plenty of laughs along the way.

Congratulations to all of the finalists and winners, and thank you to the Telegraph & Argus for a great event.

We're already looking forward to what the next year brings!

Is safety being overlooked in agriculture… or is this the reality we’re still not willing to face?

Six farm worker deaths in six weeks.
33 lives lost in a year in UK agriculture and forestry.

That’s not a blip. That’s a pattern.

We tend to focus on fatalities as isolated events — but in safety, we know they usually sit at the top of a much bigger pyramid: near misses, minor injuries, serious harm. The visible stuff is only ever part of the story.

In agriculture, that base is likely much bigger than the numbers show.
Why? Because the system is complicated:

👉 high-risk work as standard
👉 inconsistent reporting
👉 limited access to dedicated OSH support
👉 and farmers trying to manage safety alongside everything else just to keep things going.

And it’s not just injuries either — there’s fatigue, isolation, long hours, disease exposure, mental health strain… all part of the same picture.

So when we see headlines like this, the real question isn’t just “why did it happen?”

It’s: what is it about the way we work in agriculture that keeps allowing it to happen?

Until that changes, the numbers probably won’t.

On Friday 3rd July, I'll be attending the Airedale Business Showcase at Victoria Hall, Keighley, where I'll also be delivering a short 15-minute presentation on Creating a Culture of Safety in the Workplace.

We'll be exploring how safety goes beyond policies and procedures, and how organisations can build a culture where people feel empowered, engaged, and responsible for creating safer working environments.

If you're attending the showcase, please come along and say hello. There will be a fantastic range of local businesses exhibiting, plenty of networking opportunities, and it's completely free to attend.

I look forward to seeing some familiar faces and meeting new connections.

The Employment Rights Act 2025 isn’t just an HR update — it will change how health & safety works day to day.

Here’s what it really means in practice:

👉 Zero-hour workers won’t be “casual” anymore
Regular hours = full training, proper supervision, and inclusion in all safety processes.

👉 Shift changes could create safety risks
If cancelling shifts costs money, unsafe work might go ahead. Safety must come first.

👉 Same standards for everyone
If someone is doing the job, they need the same training and protection — no exceptions.

👉 Record keeping is critical
If it’s not documented, it didn’t happen. Everything needs to align.

👉 Fatigue risk may increase
Stable hours don’t remove risk — especially if people work multiple jobs.

👉 More short-notice absences
Day-one rights are positive, but gaps in staffing can impact safety.

👉 People will speak up more
Stronger protections = more reporting. Good for safety, if handled well.

👉 Faster disruption during industrial action
Less notice = less time to prepare. Plan ahead.

👉 Monitoring must be justified
Surveillance needs a clear safety purpose.

👉 Safety must work for everyone
Equality means thinking about how risks affect different people.

The shift is clear:
Less flexibility
More structure, planning, and accountability

For H&S professionals, this is about raising standards — not just ticking boxes.

How good are your LOTO procedures… really?

Not on paper, not in the audit folder — but when a contractor turns up on site, multiple crews are working in the same area, and the pressure is on to get the job done.

We’ve been on jobs where there’s real pressure to unlock or remove tags early. Usually it comes from time pressure, production demands, or the “it should be fine now” mindset. That’s exactly where things start to break down.

If isolation hasn’t been properly verified, it stays in place. No shortcuts, no assumptions, no bending the process because the job is running late.

When group lockouts involve mixed crews, everyone needs to be in the pre-job briefing — not just internal teams. If anything changes mid-shift, you stop and reset. Every authorised person applies their own lock. No exceptions, no “we’ve already done it for you”.

LOTO only works when people are willing to stand firm in those moments. And that’s often the hardest part when pressure starts building.

The real test is whether the system still holds up when real-world pressure, assumptions, and multiple employers all collide on the same job.

Safe isolation stays until it’s genuinely safe to remove it.

World Day for Health and Safety at Work – 28 April

A key date in the calendar to refocus on what really matters — keeping people safe at work.

Across the UK, organisations are using this time to revisit safety procedures, run briefings, and raise awareness around both physical and mental wellbeing.

It’s also a chance to look ahead — identifying risks, improving processes, and strengthening overall safety culture.

Health and safety shouldn’t be a one-day conversation, but a continuous commitment throughout the year.

So, what’s one change you’ll make to create a safer working environment?
