Still going over that conversation in your head? This might help.

Most of us have someone in our lives who makes things harder than they should be. A family member who always has a comment ready. A colleague who drains the energy from a room. A friend who somehow leaves you feeling worse than before you saw them.

And then there's the replaying. The mental energy spent going over what was said, or what you wish you'd said, long after the conversation has ended. Often when you're trying to sleep.

The thing is, you have considerably more power in these dynamics than you might think. Not in the way most people expect but it's real, and it works.

The need to control everything isn't a personality flaw. It's a protective response — one the mind develops, usually a long time ago, because uncertainty felt unsafe.

Understanding that is often where things begin to shift.
