☀️ Hot Weather Advice from Your Pharmacy Team

With temperatures rising across the UK, please take extra care, especially if you are older, have a long-term health condition, are pregnant, or are caring for young children.

💧 Stay hydrated – Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.

🧴 Use sunscreen – Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen before going outdoors and reapply regularly, especially if you are sweating.

🌳 Plan your day wisely – If possible, go out early in the morning or later in the evening. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun between 11am and 3pm, when temperatures and UV levels are highest.

🧢 Keep cool – Wear light clothing, a hat, and sunglasses, and seek shade where possible.

💊 Be mindful of your medicines – Some medicines can increase the risk of dehydration or make you more sensitive to heat. Speak to your pharmacist if you have any concerns.

👵 Check on vulnerable family members and neighbours during periods of hot weather.

⚠️ Watch for signs of heat exhaustion such as dizziness, headache, nausea, excessive sweating, or feeling faint.

If you have any concerns about your health or medicines during the hot weather, please speak to a member of our pharmacy team.

Stay safe, stay cool, and stay hydrated. ☀️💙

Repeat Prescriptions: Please Only Order What You Need

Many of us are on regular repeat medicines, and it is easy to get into the habit of ordering the same items every month. Click, request, collect. Job done.

But when medicines are ordered automatically, or when every item on the repeat list is requested without checking what is already at home, waste can build up very quickly.

A few extra boxes of tablets, another inhaler, bottles, creams, dressings or eye drops “just in case” may not seem like much. However, medicine waste costs the NHS hundreds of millions of pounds every year. That is money that could be used to treat patients, support services, and improve access to care.

Before placing your next repeat prescription request, please take a moment to check what you already have at home. You may need your blood pressure tablets this month but still have enough painkillers, creams or inhalers. That is perfectly fine. You do not need to order everything on your repeat list every time.

Automatic ordering may feel convenient, but it can sometimes mean medicines are supplied when they are not needed, especially if treatments have changed or doses have been adjusted.

Once medicines have left the pharmacy, they cannot be reused for another patient, even if the box is unopened and untouched. Returned medicines are binned regardless of whether they have been used or not. This is done for safety reasons, but sadly it means the NHS has still paid for medicines that can no longer help anyone.

Please avoid stockpiling medicines “just in case.” Keeping large amounts at home can lead to expiry, confusion, accidental misuse, and unnecessary waste. It can also affect supply for other patients who need those medicines.

If you are unsure whether you still need a medicine, or you have items at home that you no longer take, please speak to your pharmacist or GP surgery. Please do not stop prescribed medicines without professional advice.

Reducing medicine waste is not about blame. It is about all of us making small, sensible changes that protect our NHS.

Before you order, please pause and check.

Order only what you need.

That one simple action helps protect NHS resources, reduces waste, supports medicine supply, and keeps your own home safer and more organised.

Every prescription item matters.

Every box saved counts.

Let’s order wisely, reduce medicine waste, and protect our NHS.
