πŸ‘‰ Big feelings need calm adults πŸ‘ˆ

When children are overwhelmed, they're not giving us a hard timeβ€”they're having a hard time.

Our calm can become their calm.

Before trying to solve the problem:

🌿 Slow your own breathing.
🌿 Lower your voice.
🌿 Get down to their eye level.
🌿 Let them know they're safe.
🌿 Remember that connection comes before correction.

Children learn emotional regulation from the adults around them.

Every calm response helps build their emotional toolkit for the future.

πŸ’š Which calming strategies work best for your family?

πŸ‘‰ When reassurance becomes part of the problem πŸ‘ˆ

It's completely natural to reassure your child when they're anxious.

But if they ask the same question over and over…

"Are you sure?"
"What if...?"
"Will I be okay?"
..constant reassurance can accidentally keep anxiety going.

Instead, you might say:
πŸ’¬ "I know your worry is asking that question again."
πŸ’¬ "Let's think about what happened last time."
πŸ’¬ "What do you think your brave brain would say?"

The goal isn't to remove every worry.

It's to help children learn they can copeβ€”even when they're uncertain.

Confidence grows through experience, not certainty.

❀️ Anxiety wants certainty. Life doesn't always provide it. Resilience comes from learning we can handle the unknown.

Anxiety isn't always what you think it looks like...

When we think of anxiety, we often picture worry. But in children, anxiety can look very different.

It might show up as:
β€’ Frequent tummy aches or headaches
β€’ Difficulty sleeping
β€’ Irritability or anger
β€’ Avoiding school or activities
β€’ Needing constant reassurance
β€’ Meltdowns over seemingly small things
β€’ Becoming unusually quiet or withdrawn

Children don't always have the words to explain what's happening inside. Their behaviour is often their way of communicating that they're struggling.

Instead of asking, "What's wrong with you?" try asking, "I wonder if something feels difficult right now?"

A little curiosity and compassion can go a long way.

❀️ Have you ever noticed anxiety showing up in unexpected ways in your child? Share your experiences belowβ€”you never know who you might help.

Did you know?

πŸ‘‰ Over 1 million children in England were referred to mental health services in the last year – a 10% increase.

πŸ‘‰ Anxiety is the most common reason for referral, with many families facing waiting times of 2 years or more for support.

πŸ‘‰ Referrals for ADHD, Tourette's syndrome, and Autism have also risen significantly.

If you're feeling worried about your child's emotional wellbeing, you're not alone. Reaching out for support early can make a real difference.

As a therapist, I offer a safe, compassionate space for children, young people, and parents to explore worries, build confidence, and develop practical coping strategies while you're waiting for, alongside, or instead of statutory services.

You don't have to navigate this journey on your own. πŸ’™

I use lots of craft activities when I'm working with children and one of my young clients has been making this during our sessions.

We talked about emotions and what it meant to them and they said kindness, helping others and best of all they said that it made them feel 'happy' ☺️
