Haviland House Dementia Care Home

Haviland House Dementia Care Home Haviland House is a purpose-built dementia care home based in Goring.
(1)

Our key focus is providing a truly person-centred approach, developed specifically to meet the needs of our residents living with dementia. It is important that Haviland House feels like a real home, so we have created an environment in which our residents are happy, independent and confident. There are five unique, separate households across three stories which are designed to care for particular

stages of dementia, allowing specific needs to be catered for. Each household has its own dedicated dementia support carers, who can build rapport, friendship and stability with the residents that they care for. In 2019 Haviland House was a ‘Best Dementia Care Home’ finalist in the National Dementia Care Awards and the home’s Health & Wellbeing Coordinator won the National Activity Providers Association’s ‘Best Activity Coordinator’ award.

When we talk about activities in care homes, what springs to mind? Bingo? A quiz? Chair yoga? Yes, they are great activities! But what about residents living with advanced dementia or complex needs, who may not be able to join a group or go out very often? Does that mean their world should become just one room?
Not in Haviland House! 💙

Inclusion is about meeting people where they are and tailoring meaningful experiences for them. For example, this may look like an ordinary plastic box, but inside is a trip to the seaside. 🌊 A speaker brings the sounds of waves and seagulls. There is a gentle spray of water, a smooth pebble, a rough seashell, seaside scents and pictures, all brought together through a story and personal interaction. There are no questions to get right and no complicated instructions. A person can simply hear, smell, touch, feel and experience. 💙

We had a very special visitor at Haviland House Care Home: Doug the therapeutic pony from The Little Hoof Company.

Doug spent time in our beautiful garden, where a group of residents gathered around him to stroke him, say hello and ask questions about him. There was plenty of conversation, curiosity and, of course, lots of smiles.

But what was particularly important to us was making sure that residents who find it difficult to come out into the garden didn't miss out. So Doug came to them. 🐴🏡 He visited residents in their rooms on our Elmer household, where we support people with a higher level of need. For some residents, going outside or joining a group isn't always possible, but that shouldn't mean that wonderful experiences cannot come to them instead.

Seeing a real pony appear at the door and come right into the room was something very special. The reactions were beautiful: surprise, interest, touch, connection and so much happiness. 💚

And Doug deserves some recognition too! He was incredibly calm and brave, even travelling in the lift so that he could visit residents upstairs.

When it’s nice weather, why not take the art supplies outside? ☀️🎨

We spent some lovely time outdoors painting pebbles with names, flowers, pictures and colourful little designs.

And they don’t disappear into a cupboard afterwards! Our painted stones can now become part of the flowerbeds at Haviland House, adding little splashes of colour and personality to the garden. Another perk of having a beautiful outdoor space in a care home. 🌸💚

We recently had an Alice in Wonderland afternoon, with our own little Mad Hatter's Tea Party. ☕️

We transformed one of our trolleys with Alice, White Rabbit, Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat and other familiar characters from the book. Vintage bone china teacups and saucers, together with whimsical little petits fours, completed the scene.

It was lovely to see how many residents recognised Alice straight away. Smiles appeared, fingers pointed towards the pictures, and we heard, "Alice in Wonderland!" more than once! 🥰

A little throwback to our King's Birthday celebration at Cottingham's Café. 👑☕

It was one of those afternoons when every chair seemed to be taken! We had a King's Birthday quiz, plenty of favourite songs, and, of course, a Proper Afternoon Tea :)

Our kitchen team really spoilt us with beautiful cupcakes and delicate finger sandwiches. We brought out the vintage bone china teacups (thanks so much to Haviland House Day Service for lending them), which made everyone feel just a little bit more elegant.

There is something wonderfully "proper" about cucumber sandwiches and fine china... they somehow make any occasion feel a bit grand!

Just look at these beautiful handmade fans!
We think they've done a wonderful job... and if the sunshine decides to stay a little longer, they'll certainly be ready!

Last week’s warm weather brought a real feeling of summer to the Haviland House garden. ☀️🌹
Our residents spent lots of peaceful time outside enjoying the sunshine, the warmth and the scent of the flowers. The roses are looking absolutely beautiful at the moment and the whole garden feels calm, colourful and tranquil.
Artists have always been drawn to roses and summer gardens. This week, our garden felt like one of those paintings quietly come to life.
