I am a fully qualified and insured NAVP Veterinary Physiotherapist, based in Essex, Physiotehrapy is mainly used for horses, dogs and cats, but can benefit a wide variety of animals! I use soft tissue massage and mobilisation, stretching, myofascial release, kinesio taping, remedial exercise, and electrotherapy to optimise healing following injury or surgery, and address areas of muscular imbalanc

e, pain, tension, restricted range of motion, and abnormal functional movement patterns. Physiotherapy can also be hugely beneficial in managing ongoing conditions, such as osteoarthrtis. For competitive animals, physiotherapy can also improve athletic performance and reduce injury risk. I am also a member of the Register of Animal Musculoskeletal Practitioners (RAMP). RAMP has been created to give owners and referring veterinarians peace of mind that the practitioner is fully qualified and insured, only works within the their scope of practice, and demonstrates a professional level of education and clinical experience. http://www.rampregister.org/

Once an appointment has been booked, an initial history form will be e-mailed to you, for completion, prior to the first session. At the start of every session, a comprehensive static and dynamic assessment will be performed to identify most appropriate treatment options, and monitor progress. After each session, the owner will receive a comprehensive session report and homework plan. Equine Physiotherapy Session: £40
Small Animal Physiotherapy Session: £30

*Please note that sports therapy is not a substitute for correct veterinary care. Veterinary permission will be required before sessions can be commenced, in accordance with The Veterinary Surgeons 1966. I will also not be able to work on the animal if there are any signs of lameness/ significant gait abnormality. Your veterinarian should be your first point of contact for any major concerns.

There are still many misconceptions surrounding musculoskeletal therapy within animal care, and these misunderstandings can sometimes prevent owners from accessing appropriate support for their animals.

❌ Musculoskeletal therapy is only needed when an animal is already injured.

✅ In reality, musculoskeletal practitioners can support comfort, movement quality, mobility, conditioning, rehabilitation, and overall wellbeing long before problems become more significant.

❌ Mobility support is only important for older animals.

✅ Animals of all ages and activity levels can experience muscular tension, movement restrictions, compensation patterns or physical challenges that may benefit from professional assessment and support.

❌ Owners are “just paying for an hour session”.

✅ What often goes unseen is the huge amount of professional responsibility that exists behind the scenes.

Practitioners spend countless hours attending continuing professional development courses, reading research, writing reports, collaborating with veterinary professionals, maintaining insurance and registration requirements, and continually developing their knowledge to help ensure safe, evidence-informed care.

❌ All practitioners have the same qualifications and standards.

✅ Training, professional accountability and scope of practice can vary significantly, which is why understanding registration and professional standards is so important for owners.

❌ Some people assume musculoskeletal therapy works in isolation.

✅ In reality, qualified practitioners often work collaboratively alongside vets and multidisciplinary teams to help support the animal as part of a wider healthcare approach.

Education and awareness matter because informed owners are better equipped to make confident, safe decisions for their animals’ wellbeing.

🐱 Physiotherapy for Cats – It's Not Just for Dogs & Horses! 🐱

When people think of veterinary physiotherapy, they often think of dogs recovering from surgery or horses in competition. But cats can benefit from physiotherapy too!

Physiotherapy can play an important role in supporting cats with conditions such as:
🐾 Osteoarthritis
🐾 Fracture healing
🐾 Post-surgical rehabilitation (such as after a femoral head and neck excision)
🐾 Neurological conditions, including intervertebral disc disease
🐾 General mobility and age-related changes

Treating cats is often very different from treating other species. Assessments and treatments are usually carried out very much on the cat's terms, with each session tailored to their individual personality, preferences, and tolerance levels.

While some cats happily enjoy massage (Photo 2) and other manual therapies, and even hydrotherapy, many respond best to exercises that incorporate their natural behaviours. For example, encouraging a cat to crouch to reach a food bowl and then gently moving the bowl forwards can promote repeated sit-to-stand movements, helping to improve hindlimb strength, joint mobility, and overall function.

By adapting rehabilitation techniques to suit the individual cat, physiotherapy can help improve comfort, mobility, confidence, and quality of life.

Because when it comes to rehabilitation, our feline friends deserve the same support as every other patient.

🐾 The Benefits of Home Visits 🐾

One of the key aspects of my canine physiotherapy service across Essex is that I provide home visits, allowing your dog to be assessed and treated in the environment where they feel most comfortable.

For many dogs, particularly those who are anxious, elderly, or experiencing pain, travelling to an unfamiliar clinic can be stressful. Stress can alter posture, muscle tone, movement, and behaviour, making it harder to gain a true picture of how your dog is functioning.

By assessing your dog at home, I can observe them in their normal environment and identify genuine areas of discomfort, weakness, compensation, or restriction without the influence of stress. Relaxed dogs are also less likely to brace or guard painful areas, allowing for a more accurate assessment and more effective treatment.

Home visits also allow me to assess factors that may affect your dog's comfort and recovery, such as flooring, stairs, access to the garden, and bedding. This helps me provide practical recommendations tailored to your dog's daily life.

I can also demonstrate rehabilitation exercises in the exact environment where they will be performed, helping owners feel confident continuing their dog's programme between sessions.

✔️ Reduced stress and anxiety
✔️ More accurate assessment findings
✔️ More effective treatment sessions
✔️ Assessment of environmental factors affecting mobility and recovery
✔️ Practical home management advice
✔️ Tailored exercise demonstrations in your dog's own environment

🏆 Competition Ready! 🏆

With the ROR East Regional Dressage Championships just around the corner, the very handsome Purdy had his final physiotherapy session yesterday, to help ensure he's feeling and performing at his best for the big weekend.

Leading up to competition, physiotherapy can play an important role in identifying and addressing areas of muscular tension, stiffness, or restriction that may affect comfort, movement, and performance. The aim is to optimise mobility, support recovery from training, and help the horse move as freely and efficiently as possible.

This session included a combination of manual therapies, including massage, limb mobilisations, stretching, and dynamic mobilisation exercises, alongside H-Wave therapy over the hindquarters to support circulation, muscle function, and relaxation of any residual tension. We find that the H-wave particularly helps with his canter work!

Wishing this partnership the very best of luck this weekend – you've put in the hard work, now it's time to enjoy it! 🍀

Do you have a competition coming up this season? Whether you're preparing for dressage, showjumping, eventing, showing, or any other discipline, physiotherapy can help support your horse's comfort, movement, and performance. Get in touch to find out how I can help your horse feel their best before their next event.

Veterinary physiotherapy doesn’t stop at the end of the session 👏🐴🐶

One of the biggest factors in helping your animal progress and maintain results is what happens between appointments — their “homework”! 📚

Following your tailored home exercise and management plan can help to:
✨ Manage pain and inflammation
✨ Manage soft tissue tension and myofascial restrictions
✨ Maintain mobility and flexibility
✨ Improve muscle strength and co-ordination
✨ Support recovery and healing
✨ Help prevent compensatory movement patterns returning

Depending on your animal’s needs, homework may include:
✔️ Dynamic mobilisation exercises
✔️ Weight shifting exercises
✔️ Pole work
✔️ Passive and active range of motion exercises
✔️ Passive stretching
✔️ Strengthening and coordination work
✔️ Heat therapy
✔️ Electrotherapies such as TENS and pulsed electromagnetic field therapy

These small, consistent exercises and therapies at home can make a huge difference in maximising the benefits of your veterinary physiotherapy sessions and supporting long-term musculoskeletal health 💪

Every exercise plan is individually tailored to your animal, their condition, and their stage of recovery or performance.

Consistency is key 🔑 Even a few minutes a day can have a big impact over time.

🐾 Is your dog just “slowing down”… or could they be uncomfortable? 🐾

As our dogs get older, changes can happen gradually, making them easy to miss.

Have you noticed your dog:
🐶 Struggling to get up after resting?
🐶 Hesitating on the stairs or jumping into the car?
🐶 Slowing down on walks or tiring more easily?
🐶 Becoming less playful or interactive?
🐶 Wanting less fuss or avoiding other dogs?
🐶 Seeming grumpy, withdrawn, or different in behaviour?

These changes are often dismissed as “just old age”, but they can actually be signs of pain or discomfort associated with arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions.

A study in 2024, evaluated the prevalence of osteoarthritis (OA) in dogs over 8 years old (Roitner et al., 2024). Prevalence of OA was 39.2%, 57.4%, 35.9% and 36.4% for the shoulder, elbow, hip and stifle, respectively. Another research paper suggests that OA affected the life span of 11.4% of dogs in their trial (Anderson et al., 2018).

As a RAMP registered Veterinary Physiotherapist working throughout Essex and surrounding areas, I provide thorough assessments and tailored treatment plans to help support comfort, mobility, and quality of life in older dogs.

Treatment may include:
✨ Manual therapy, including massage, myofascial release, stretching and mobilisations
✨ Kinesiology taping
✨ Electrotherapeutic modalities, including LASER, Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy and Winback Tecartherapy
✨ Tailored remedial exercises

Early intervention and ongoing support can make a huge difference in helping our older companions stay happy, comfortable, and active for as long as possible 💙

If you would like to discuss whether physiotherapy could help your dog, please feel free to get in touch.

✨ WINBACK TECARTHERAPY ✨

Winback Tecartherapy is an advanced, non-invasive therapy that uses radiofrequency energy to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes from within the tissues. It works by increasing circulation, improving tissue elasticity, reducing pain and supporting faster recovery.

One of the biggest benefits of Winback is that it can be used at all stages of healing — from acute injuries and post-operative recovery through to chronic conditions, maintenance and performance support.

Winback Tecartherapy can help horses with:
🐴 Muscle soreness and tightness
🐴 Back pain and reduced flexibility
🐴 Tendon and ligament injuries
🐴 Arthritis and joint stiffness
🐴 Reduced performance or discomfort under saddle
🐴 Compensation patterns and muscular imbalance
🐴 Recovery following exercise or competition

The system also incorporates:
⚡ TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) to help reduce pain and discomfort
⚡ NMES (Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation) to aid muscle activation, strengthening and rehabilitation

By combining manual therapy with advanced technology, treatments can be tailored specifically to your horse’s needs to optimise comfort, movement and performance.
Suitable for competition horses, leisure horses, veterans and rehabilitation cases alike — helping your horse move and feel their best. ✨

Feel free to get in touch if you would like more information or to discuss how Winback Tecartherapy could help your horse.
