Not every school day will go exactly as planned. You might find a lesson difficult, have a disagreement with a friend or simply have a day when things don’t feel quite right.

Here are some simple ways to cope when things don’t go to plan:

⏸️ Pause before you react – give yourself a moment to breathe and think about what to do next.
πŸŒ… Remember, tomorrow is a fresh start – one difficult moment or day doesn’t define your whole school experience.
πŸ’¬ Ask for help when you need it – you don’t have to work everything out by yourself. Talk to a parent, carer, teacher or another adult you trust.

Everyone has difficult days, and everyone copes differently. Be kind to yourself, take things one step at a time and remember that asking for support is a positive step.

Small steps can make a big difference.

Is your sleep routine still in holiday mode?

Later nights and lie-ins are often part of the school holidays, so getting back into a regular sleep routine before school starts can take a little time.

As part of our Small Steps Back to School series, Mindworks Surrey is sharing some simple ways to help children and young people get their sleep back on track:

⏰ Make small changes – gradually bring bedtimes and wake-up times forward rather than trying to change everything in one night.

πŸ“– Help your brain unwind – create a calming bedtime routine with activities such as reading, listening to music or having some quiet time away from screens.

πŸŒ™ Don’t put pressure on yourself to sleep – worrying about falling asleep can sometimes make it harder. Give yourself time to relax and remember that one restless night is okay.

If sleep difficulties are happening regularly, leaving you tired most days or affecting everyday life, talk to a parent, carer or another trusted adult.

Small steps can make a big difference.

The flu vaccine helps protect against flu, which can be a serious or even life-threatening illness.

Those who are pregnant, children aged 2 to 3 years, school-aged children (Reception to Year 11) and children with certain long-term health conditions can now have their vaccine, and others at higher risk will be eligible from 1 October.
