If your heels seem to become dry and cracked every summer, you're not imagining it.

Warm weather often means sandals, flip-flops and going barefoot more often. While great for keeping cool, these types of footwear leave your heels exposed, allowing the skin to dry out and spread as you walk.

Over time, this can lead to cracked heels that are not only uncomfortable but, in some cases, painful.

To help keep your heels healthy this summer:

๐Ÿ‘ฃ Moisturise daily with a foot-specific moisturiser.
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Wear supportive footwear where possible.
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Avoid walking barefoot on hard surfaces.
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Gently remove hard skin โ€“ never cut it yourself.

If your heels are deeply cracked, painful or keep coming back despite looking after them, it's worth seeking professional advice.

Our podiatrists can safely remove hard skin, identify any underlying causes and recommend the best treatment to help restore your feet.

Because summer is for showing off your sandalsโ€”not hiding your heels.

When it comes to our feet, prevention is definitely better than treatment ๐Ÿ‘ฃ

It's easy to forget about your feet when they're not causing you any problems.

But just like brushing your teeth or wearing sunscreen, a little preventative care can go a long way.

Simple habits such as:

โœ” Checking your feet regularly
โœ” Wearing supportive, well-fitting shoes
โœ” Moisturising dry skin
โœ” Keeping toenails neatly trimmed
โœ” Seeking advice when something doesn't feel right
..can help reduce the risk of common foot problems developing.

The best time to look after your feet isn't when they're painful โ€” it's before they become painful.

If you do notice a change, don't wait for it to get worse. Early advice can often make treatment simpler and help keep you active and comfortable for longer.

Because healthy feet help you enjoy every step.

How many of us are struggling with this right now!!!

If your shoes feel tighter by the end of a hot day, you're not alone.

Warm weather causes your blood vessels to widen, making it easier for fluid to collect in your feet and ankles. Add in long periods of standing, walking or travelling, and you may notice your feet feeling swollen, tight or uncomfortable.

A few simple tips can help:

๐Ÿ‘ฃ Keep moving โ€“ avoid sitting or standing in one position for too long.
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Stay well hydrated.
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Put your feet up when you get the chance.
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Wear comfortable, supportive footwear that allows room for your feet to expand slightly in the heat.

Some swelling during hot weather can be perfectly normal. However, if it's persistent, happens in just one foot, is painful, or is accompanied by redness, warmth or other concerning symptoms, it's important to seek medical advice promptly.

If you're finding swollen feet are becoming a regular occurrence or are affecting your comfort, we'd be happy to assess your foot health and offer advice tailored to you.

Call us on 01372 454583 for appointments - we are here 6 days a week to keep you pain free.

Stretch & Recover - another great tip for those with achy feet ๐Ÿ‘ฃ

A little time spent stretching can make a big difference to how your feet and legs feel.

If you've been on your feet all day, enjoyed a long walk or simply notice your feet feeling tight by the evening, a gentle stretch for your feet and calves can help relieve tension and improve flexibility.

Try taking just a few minutes to:

โœ” Stretch your calf muscles against a wall
โœ” Gently roll the sole of your foot over a tennis ball or massage ball
โœ” Flex and point your toes to improve mobility

Remember, stretching should feel comfortable โ€“ never painful.

If you regularly experience tight calves, heel pain or aching feet despite stretching, it could be a sign of an underlying foot condition that would benefit from professional assessment.

We're here to help keep you moving comfortably, whatever your age or activity level.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Why do my feet burn in the evening?

If your feet feel hot, burning or tingling at the end of the day, you're not imagining it - and it's not something you should simply ignore.

There are many possible reasons why your feet might burn, including:

๐Ÿ‘ฃ Spending long hours on your feet
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Poorly fitting or unsupportive footwear
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Nerve irritation
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Circulation issues
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Certain medical conditions

Sometimes it's simply tired feet after a busy day, but if the sensation happens regularly, is becoming more uncomfortable, or is affecting your sleep, it's worth getting it checked.

A podiatrist can assess your symptoms, look at your foot health and biomechanics, and, where appropriate, recommend treatment or advise if further medical investigation is needed.

You don't have to put up with uncomfortable feet.

If your evenings are ending with burning, aching or tingling feet, we're here to help you get to the bottom of it.

โ˜€๏ธ Summer shouldn't be spent hiding your feet.

If you've been avoiding sandals, flip-flops or going barefoot because of a verruca, now is the perfect time to do something about it.

Verrucas are incredibly common, but they don't always disappear on their own. Some can become painful, spread to other areas of the foot, or simply linger for months or even years.

At Bookham Podiatry, we offer Swiftยฎ microwave therapy โ€“ an innovative treatment that works differently to traditional verruca treatments. Rather than freezing or burning the verruca, Swift uses precise microwave energy to stimulate your body's own immune response, helping it recognise and fight the virus.

โœ” No dressings required after treatment
โœ” You can walk out of the clinic afterwards
โœ” No need to avoid swimming or normal daily activities

If a verruca is stopping you from feeling confident this summer, we'd be happy to assess it and discuss whether Swift treatment is the right option for you.

Call us on 01372 454583 to have a chat and discuss options.

Get back to enjoying every step this summer.

The right shoes may not always be the ones we want to buy but there are many out there that don't just look good, they help keep your feet healthy, comfortable and supported every day.

If your shoes are:
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Too tight
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Worn out
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Lacking support
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Or simply the wrong shape for your feet...
..they can contribute to problems such as heel pain, corns, bunions, blisters and even pain in your knees, hips or back.

That doesn't mean you have to sacrifice style for comfort.

Choosing footwear that fits well, supports your feet and suits the activities you enjoy can make a huge difference to your overall foot health.

If you're struggling to find shoes that feel comfortable, or every pair seems to rub, pinch or leave your feet aching, it may not be the shoes alone.

We're here to help identify the cause and offer practical advice, so you can find footwear that works for both your feet and your lifestyle. Call us for appointments on 01372 454583 - our team are here 6 days a week.

Surrey Steps Sunday - how lucky are we with where we live?

This week we're heading to one of Surrey's most iconic viewpoints... Leith Hill.

As the highest point in South East England, it's well worth the climb. Whether you're tackling the summit, exploring the woodland trails or simply taking in the incredible views from the tower, it's a fantastic way to spend a Sunday outdoors.

Just remember, the right footwear can make all the difference. Uneven paths and hills place extra demands on your feet, ankles and knees, so if you're noticing aches, blisters or heel pain after your walks, don't assume it's just part of getting older or being active.

Many common foot problems can be treated, helping you get back to enjoying every step.

Have you walked Leith Hill? We'd love to know your favourite Surrey walking spot for future Surrey Steps Sunday posts.

If it feels like every new pair of shoes ends up rubbing your little toe, you're certainly not alone.

While it's easy to blame the shoes, the real cause is often your feet.

A prominent little toe, a bunionette (sometimes called a tailor's bunion), the way you walk, or even a gradual change in foot shape can all create extra pressure exactly where your shoe sits.

Over time, that constant rubbing can lead to:

๐Ÿ‘ฃ Pain and tenderness
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Hard skin or corns
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Blisters
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Difficulty finding shoes that feel comfortable

The good news? You don't have to simply put up with it.

A podiatrist can identify what's causing the problem and recommend practical solutions, from footwear advice and pressure relief to treatment for any painful skin that has developed.

Because the right shoes should take you wherever you want to go, not leave you limping home.

If your little toe seems to have a disagreement with every pair of shoes you own, we're here to help.
