đź’™ Caring for others can be one of the most rewarding roles a person takes on, but it can also be one of the most challenging.

Unpaid carers provide vital support to family members, friends, and neighbours who are ill, disabled, elderly, or living with long-term conditions. Their dedication helps loved ones remain independent, connected, and cared for within their communities.

Behind the scenes, many carers face significant challenges, including financial pressures, balancing work and caring responsibilities, social isolation, and impacts on their own health and wellbeing. Despite this, they continue to give their time, energy, and compassion every day.

Today, we recognise and celebrate the incredible contribution unpaid carers make to families and communities. Their care often goes unseen, but its impact is immeasurable.

If you are an unpaid carer, thank you for everything you do. Your commitment, resilience, and kindness make a real difference every day. đź’™

During hot weather, older adults are at higher risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Here are simple but important steps to stay safe:

Stay Cool
Keep indoors during the hottest hours (11am–3pm).
Close curtains/blinds in sunny rooms.
Use a fan if available.
Wear loose, light-coloured clothing.
Take cool showers or place a cool damp cloth on the neck and wrists.
Drink Plenty of Fluids
Drink water regularly, even if you do not feel thirsty.
Avoid too much alcohol, caffeine or very sugary drinks.
Keep a bottle or glass of water nearby at all times.
Keep the Home Ventilated
Open windows early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler.
Avoid using ovens or unnecessary electrical appliances that generate heat.
Eat Light Meals
Choose cold foods such as salads, fruit and yoghurt.
Eat smaller meals more frequently if appetite is reduced.
Medication & Health

Some medications can increase dehydration risk or affect temperature control. Speak with your GP or pharmacist if concerned, especially if taking:

diuretics (“water tablets”)
blood pressure medication
heart medication
Look Out for Warning Signs

Seek medical help urgently if experiencing:

dizziness or confusion
severe headache
difficulty breathing
nausea or vomiting
very high temperature
extreme weakness

Stay Connected
Keep in regular contact with family, neighbours or carers.
Do not hesitate to ask for help with shopping or errands during extreme heat.
For Carers & Families

Please check on elderly relatives or neighbours regularly, especially those living alone or with mobility issues.

Small precautions during a heatwave can prevent serious illness and help older adults stay safe and comfortable.

Our 2025 Workforce Survey reveals a sector caught between immigration restrictions, chronic underfunding and increasing NHS responsibilities without payment. Key findings include:

đźź  Nearly 1 in 3 providers cannot meet current demand.
đźź  59% of providers employed sponsored workers in 2025.
đźź  72% report concern among overseas staff following policy changes.
đźź  7 in 10 providers deliver NHS tasks; only 26% receive extra funding.
đźź  65% say NHS staff don't provide appropriate ongoing clinical support.

The Government closed overseas recruitment in July 2025 with no credible plan to fill vacancies. Our report found nearly 9 in 10 providers report overseas careworkers contacted them because their primary sponsor couldn't give them enough hours. This is a direct consequence of poor commissioning.

Our Chief Executive, Dr Jane Townson OBE, said:

“Families across Britain are waiting for care that simply isn’t available in some places. Government underfunding and penny-pinching contracts have already driven carers away. Now they’ve pulled the plug on overseas recruitment too. It’s reckless, and people will suffer. The result is predictable: people go without support, deteriorate and end up in hospital, and then hospitals struggle to discharge them. Providers face impossible choices.

“There is no other business in the economy where Government would expect vital, skilled services to be delivered for free. It is unacceptable and unsustainable.”

The Homecare Association is calling for urgent action:

đźź  Ring-fence social care budgets and invest at least ÂŁ1.6 billion to address historic underfunding in homecare.
đźź  Legislate for a National Contract for Care, with sustainable minimum fee rates.
🟠 Embed homecare providers as core partners in integrated Neighbourhood Teams so that careworkers are recognised as part of the community health and care workforce, not just “add-ons” contracted at arm’s length.
đźź  Develop a statutory workforce plan to ensure enough careworkers for an ageing population.
đźź  Expand Regional Partnerships to cover sponsored workers with insufficient hours and other employment issues, not just those displaced by licence revocations.

Without these reforms, millions risk going without vital care - not because providers don’t want to deliver it, but because Government policy has made it impossible.
