Quick green flag worth checking before you book any laser treatment: ask what level qualification your practitioner actually holds, and for which treatment.

It matters more than most clients realise. A VTCT Level 4 in Laser & IPL covers hair removal and skin rejuvenation. Tattoo removal needs a Level 5. Same laser room, same-looking machine, completely different qualification required.

And here's the bit nobody mentions: insurance is only valid when the qualification matches the treatment being performed. If the person holding the device isn't qualified for that specific treatment, the cover doesn't stand up.

I achieved my VTCT Level 4 in Laser & IPL in 2023, and my VTCT Level 5 with Distinction in June this year. Ofqual-regulated qualifications are the baseline of doing this work safely, and that's why I keep investing in them.

So before you book anywhere, ask the question. Any decent practitioner will be happy to show you.

Clients often ask me why I don't just "turn the machine up higher" for faster results.

Here's the honest answer: a laser that's too powerful for the person holding it is like a master key in the wrong hands. The machine doesn't make the treatment safe. The qualification does.

A Class 4 laser without a Level 5 qualification carries the same risk as a sports car with no driving licence. It doesn't get you there quicker. It gets you hurt.

And even in trained hands, more power and more trauma don't mean better long-term results. Pushing settings too hard is like turning the oven up to maximum to cook faster. You don't get a better meal, you get something burnt that can't be undone. With tattoo removal, your lymphatic system needs time to filter the broken-down ink particles safely. Rush that, and it backs up like a flooded drain.

I hold my VTCT Level 5 qualification because the law and your skin both require it. I've held it since long before it was a talking point online. It's the key that makes the tool safe to use, and it's the first question you should ask any practitioner, before price, before before-and-after photos, before anything else.

If you're ever unsure who's qualified to hold what, ask. I'd rather you asked me and booked elsewhere than ended up in a chair with someone who shouldn't be holding the device at all.

Green flag on a lip product, for once.

Most "plumping" lip products hide behind vague wording like "plumping complex" or "volumising blend". You don't get told the mechanism. You don't get a named active. You just get pretty packaging.

If you've ever booked an LED facial and wondered why some clinics use red, some use blue, and some layer three colours at once, it's because each wavelength does a completely different job at a cellular level.

I use the Dermalux TriWave MD in my Surrey clinic almost every day, and here's how I break it down for you before we ever switch it on.

Blue 415nm targets the bacteria that live inside your pores and drive breakouts. Think of it like sunlight on a damp corner. It disrupts the environment acne needs to thrive, which is why I reach for it during active flare-ups.

Red 633nm speaks directly to your fibroblasts, the cells that build collagen and elastin. This is the wavelength I use for ageing, dullness, and post-treatment recovery. Your skin cells absorb the light almost like a plant absorbs sunlight, and use it as fuel to repair.
