🌟 What to ask a casualty 🌟

When dealing with a casualty as a first aider in a non-emergency situation, here are 8 questions you can ask to better understand what’s happened and what you need to do next.

⭐ What’s your name? If you’re helping somebody, you’ve already introduced yourself, it’s much easier and trusting if you’re on first name terms.
⭐ How old are you? They may be happy to tell you.
⭐What led up to this event. They may or may not remember, but all they can tell you would be helpful.
⭐ Ask if they have any allergies? They might be having an allergic reaction to allegen.
⭐ Do you have a pre-existing medical condition? There are many conditions that can affect a person’s normal way of life.
⭐ If they have a pre-existing medical condition - have they taken their medication as required today?
⭐ Have they been eating? They could have food poisoning or an allergic reaction.
⭐ Have they been exercising? Maybe a strain or sprain.

Gathering information better helps you assess the casualty’s predicament. Passing the information onto the emergency services is vital.

Always keep calm – Listen – Be sympathetic – Assist where you can.

The HSE allowed expired first aid certificates to be extended until the 31st March 21. That date is looming fast and I only have a couple of days free to help you become compliant again. The HSE 1 day course takes 6 hours, the certification lasts for 3 years and the cost is £125 inc VAT.

I have many more dates available in April including evening and weekend training.

If your first aid certification expired after October 2020 the HSE has allowed extensions until the 31st March 2021 to be trained. Peter and Tim took advantage of this and renewed their HSE 1 day course yesterday - well done!

I have a couple of days left for training before the end of March, and more dates available in April.

The HSE is out inspecting workplaces, make sure you are Covid and first aid compliant.

Workplace regulations relating to First Aid.

The Health and Safety at work act 1974 and the Health and Safety (First-Aid) 1981 requires employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to ensure their employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work.

These regulations apply to ALL workplaces including those with less than 5 employees and the self-employed.

The other regulations you should be aware of are The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and RIDDOR.

Here’s a question for you – are you HSE compliant and do you have the right and enough equipment required to deal with an accident in the workplace (First Aid kits have to have all you require for any eventuality and must be up to date).

I can help you to become compliant by running first aid courses from 4 hours to 4 days. The most popular workplace course is the Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work, which is the HSE 1 day course. I can also supply first aid equipment from plasters to life saving defibrillators and of course first aid kits to BS8599/1-2019.
