Our Clinical Research Facility (CRF) has joined the Improving Black Health Outcomes (IBHO) BioResource – a national research programme addressing the long‑standing underrepresentation of Black communities in UK health research.

The CRF is a joint venture between Royal Surrey and the University of Surrey to deliver early-phase research. Its participation in the IBHO BioResource is a significant step in tackling a well-documented inequity: UK health research has historically relied heavily on data from people of European ancestry, limiting the relevance and effectiveness of diagnostics and treatments for Black communities

The facility has already welcomed its first participant, Erika, marking a meaningful milestone for the programme. Erika said: “It is important to me to participate in this study. It will help future management of various illnesses, so that my population can receive care that is developed for them.”

Group Chief Executive, Louise Stead was invited to talk on the Voices of Care podcast alongside fellow NHS Trust Chief Executives Vanessa Ford MBE and Cara Charles-Barks MBE.

Together they talk about the reality of NHS transformation, including the shift from hospital to community, the need to support patients to take greater control of their own health, and the challenge of moving care closer to home while still maintaining safe and effective services in acute settings.

We’re part of a new study investigating whether aspirin can safely prevent blood clots after surgery in older adults who have suffered a hip fracture 💊

In the UK, more than 72,000 people sustain a hip fracture each year. Older adults are at particularly high risk of developing blood clots.

Currently, a daily injection for 28 days is the recommended treatment. Led by Queen Mary University of London, researchers hope the study will show that an aspirin tablet could be just as effective – offering a more comfortable option for patients.

Associate Principal Investigator Nanci Doyle and Dr Helen Wilson are excited to be part of the study. Nanci said: “It is really exciting to be part of a study that has the potential to positively change clinical guidelines.

“A tablet instead of a daily injection could improve patient experience and reduce costs, while still providing safe protection against blood clots.”

“We are lucky to have such a dedicated and professional team in our Post Room. They are hardworking, reliable, highly organised and friendly and approachable,” – Alex Potterell, Operations Manager.

We’re sending a love letter to our small but mighty Post Room Team.

Meet Tony and Nigel, who deal with up to 30,000 items of mail each month. Together, they’ve worked at Royal Surrey for 38 years, with Nigel having worked here 29 years and Tony nine years.

Each day, they sort and distribute mail and collect and prepare the outgoing post. They manage and record special delivery requests, stamp every item of outgoing mail and liaise with the postal service to ensure a safe and seamless service for trust staff.

Thank you Tony and Nigel!

"A lot of men live with incontinence and need somewhere to dispose of pads and other products discreetly. At the moment, many will use disabled toilets as an alternative, but that is not a sustainable solution," Leigh Woodard, Team Lead Pelvic Health Physiotherapist.

Did you know that 30% of men will experience urinary issues, and 10% with faecal incontinence? This figure can increase for those going through their cancer treatments.

Leigh is working on a project which would bring sanitary bins to male bathrooms at Royal Surrey so that men can manage their needs discreetly and with dignity.

As part of her project, she is asking patients and staff to complete a short, anonymous questionnaire about their opinions on whether sanitary bins should be provided in male toilets.

Meet Wendy Camfield, who has been volunteering for Royal Surrey Charity for the last three years

She wanted to give back to the hospital, as she, along with her husband, had received great care at Royal Surrey 🏥

Now retired, she volunteers for Royal Surrey Charity twice a week at table top sales, selling things such as knitwear, blankets and second-hand toys, games and puzzles. She said, “I was looking for rewarding charity work and a new challenge. We are so lucky to have this hospital and I just wanted to support it. It gives me pleasure, helping other people.”
