MANUP?

MANUP? The adopted term of ‘MAN UP’ as we know it, needs to be challenged. The adopted term of 'MAN UP' as we know it, needs to be challenged.

Don't just brush yourself down & get on with it. Be brave, speak to someone, even if it's a mate. That's our focus; that's our mission. As a mental health awareness charity, we promote men's talking by displaying stories, having conversations, and discussing solutions in different ways.

Most people don't need another service.

They need someone who genuinely wants to understand their story.

One of the biggest mistakes we make is trying to fix people before we've taken the time to understand them.

When someone has been through trauma, loss, addiction, loneliness, family breakdown or years of feeling ignored, the solution isn't always another referral.

Sometimes it starts with building trust.

Listening.

Understanding where they've come from.

Understanding what's keeping them stuck.

The men who come through MANUP? all have different experiences, different struggles and different reasons for being there.

But one thing comes up time and time again.

People remember how you made them feel.

Not what service you sent them to.

Do you think we spend enough time listening to people's stories before trying to solve their problems?

"It's rarely 'mental health' as we know it; it's often a logical choice"

That line will annoy some people.

But after speaking to hundreds of men, and hearing from police officers, paramedics, NHS staff, business owners and fathers, there's a pattern that keeps appearing.

A lot of men don't describe depression.

They describe feeling finished.

Like their purpose has gone.
Like nobody needs them.
Like they've got nothing left to offer.

That's a very different conversation.

Maybe that's why simply telling men to "talk" isn't always enough.

Maybe we need to get better at listening to what they're actually saying.

What do you think?

Have you seen this in your own life, family, workplace or friendship group?

Men & Your Emotional Intelligence with James Elliott MSc

Emotional intelligence gets misunderstood.
It is not about being soft or overthinking everything.

It is about understanding what is going on inside you.
How you react. How you respond. And why certain situations hit harder than others.

When this is missing, things build up. Stress turns into frustration. Frustration turns into anger or silence. And it becomes harder to connect with people properly.

This session is about breaking that down in a practical way. Understanding your emotional responses without overcomplicating it, and learning how to handle them before they take over.

Led by James Elliott, this is a space to slow things down and make sense of what is actually happening underneath the surface.

You do not have to speak.
You do not have to turn your camera on.
You just need to show up.

Understanding lived experience is key to improving support.

This video is uncomfortable.

Good.

Because we keep telling men to talk, while ignoring how differently society reacts depending on who the victim is.

If a man hits a woman, people rightly take it seriously.

But if a woman hits a man?
“What did he do?”
“He probably deserved it.”
“Man up.”

Even abuse involving young boys is still joked about if the woman is seen as attractive.

That’s the double standard.

This isn’t about attacking women.
It’s about questioning why empathy varies by gender.

Men notice it. Boys notice it.

Then people wonder why so men many stay quiet.

We talk a lot about men’s mental health...

But not all men experience it the same way.

This MANUP? Talks session focuses on something that is often overlooked. How black and racialised men experience mental health, stigma and support differently, and why that matters.

Too many conversations miss the reality of cultural barriers, mistrust, identity and lived experience. The result is that many men are not reached, not heard and not supported in the way they need.

This session is about understanding those differences properly. Not making assumptions. Not speaking over people. But listening and learning from real experiences.

These MANUP? Talks aren’t about telling men to “just talk”.

They’re about helping people understand why some men don’t engage in the first place.

Because if a man feels judged, dismissed, labelled, laughed at or spoken down to, he’ll eventually stop opening up altogether. A lot of men already have.
,
That’s why these sessions matter.

Different speakers. Different opinions. Different backgrounds. No scripted answers and no pretending every man’s experience is the same.

Some talks focus on trauma.
Some focus on work.
Some relationships.
Some culture.
Some on the simple fact that many men feel unheard.

The goal is simple really.

Less talking at men.
More understanding why they might switch off in the first place.

All sessions are free and open to anyone willing to listen and learn a bit more. (male or female)

if you could help us to get these talks out to anyone who wants to learn, listen and make a change, could you share this to help us?

Men & Your Confidence with James Elliott MSc

Confidence is often misunderstood.
It gets confused with ego. With being loud. With having it all together.

In reality, confidence is built quietly. Through small wins. Through how you speak to yourself. Through what you do when no one is watching.

This session is about understanding what real confidence looks like for you as a man, and how it is shaped by past experiences, pressure and the voice in your own head.

Led by James Elliott, this is a space to break it down properly. Not fake confidence. Not putting on a front. Just learning how to build something real and steady over time.

You do not have to speak.
You do not have to turn your camera on.
You just need to show up.

A lot of men don’t stay quiet because they “can’t talk”.

They stay quiet because they’ve seen what can happen when they do.

This clip is just two men chatting honestly about an old workplace experience involving HR, medical records, antidepressants, and the fear of losing a job over something from years before.

Whether people agree with how it was handled or not, these moments stick with men.

Then years later, society asks why so many keep things to themselves at work.

We’re curious.
Have you ever avoided being honest in a workplace because you thought it might be used against you later?
