When arranging a funeral, you may hear the word “committal” used, but what does it actually mean?
The committal is the part of the funeral when the person who has died is formally committed to their final resting place. It is often the final part of the service and represents that important physical farewell.
For a cremation, the committal usually takes place at the crematorium, often towards the end of the service, when the coffin is committed for cremation.
For a burial, the committal takes place at the graveside, when the coffin is lowered into the grave. Final words, prayers or music may be shared.
The committal doesn't necessarily mean the whole funeral service — it is specifically the moment when we say that final goodbye.
