For years, one of the ways my anxiety showed up was trying to prepare for absolutely everything.
What might happen tomorrow?
Who will be there?
Can I rely on them?
What if something goes wrong?
What if I cannot handle it?
My brain seemed to believe that if it could just think through enough possible scenarios, eventually it would find certainty.
Spoiler: it never did.
I still experience anxiety. Training in NLP and hypnotherapy did not magically make me immune to it.
What changed was that I gained practical tools to respond differently when I noticed it happening.
My first step is usually incredibly simple.
I slow my breathing.
A deep breath in, then a long, slow breath out. I keep going until I notice my body beginning to settle.
Then I ask myself what is actually missing from my thinking in that moment.
Sometimes it is safety.
“I am safe.”
Sometimes it is perspective.
Before a job interview, for example, my anxious mind might focus entirely on whether they will think I am good enough.
So I remind myself:
“I am finding out if I want this job too.”
That small change matters to me.
I am not trying to convince myself that everything will be fine when I cannot possibly know that.
I am giving myself whatever my anxious thinking has temporarily left out of the conversation.
Safety. Choice. Perspective. Control over the things that genuinely belong to me.
I still have the same brain that can disappear down a rabbit hole if I let it.
I just have more ways of finding my way back out now.
Save this and next time anxiety starts building, ask yourself one question:
What is missing from my thinking right now?
