We can change our the way our brains are wired at any point in our life but it does take time and repetition.

Neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to reorganise itself by forming new neural connections, is a key mechanism underlying habit formation. When you repeatedly perform a behaviour, particularly in a consistent context or environment, the neural pathways associated with that behaviour strengthen. Over time, this leads to more efficient and automatic ex*****on of the habit.

Consistency is important for this process to work. The more consistently you perform the behaviour, the more likely it is to become ingrained as a habit.

These new pathways are not formed over night so set reminders and cues and reward yourself when you stick to the behaviours you want to become habit.

I hope you are all having a wonderful week (and enjoying the lovely weather) and remember that if you want something to change you will need to change something.

What are you carrying too much of at the moment? Work stress, financial pressure, caring responsibilities, relationship struggles, health worries, parenting, loneliness, burnout?
One thing I notice regularly in my counselling and hypnotherapy work is how many people minimise their own stress because they think other people ‘have it worse’. But your nervous system does not compare suffering, neither should you so if things feel hard for you right now, that matters.

As a local therapist, I just wanted to say please look after yourselves this week. Get outside if you can (not in the heat of the day at the moment), drink water, put your phone down for half an hour, breathe and rest without guilt.

And please remember you do not have to wait until things completely fall apart before reaching out for support.

Sending a bit of encouragement to anyone having a difficult week.

What are boundaries?

Not walls. Not ultimatums. Not selfishness. They aren’t there to push people away.
If you’ve ever felt guilty for setting a boundary, you’re not alone. But here’s the truth: you don’t need to explain, defend or apologise for protecting your well-being.

✨ You’re allowed to say no.
✨ You’re allowed to change your mind.
✨ You’re allowed to take up space and choose what feels right.

What boundary would you like to set today that your future self is thanking you for?

What are the signs of chronic stress?

Chronic stress is not always obvious. Many people continue going to work, looking after everyone else, smiling and functioning whilst their nervous system is quietly running on empty underneath it all.

Over time stress can become so normal that people stop recognising it. Poor sleep, overthinking, irritability, emotional numbness, headaches, exhaustion, digestive issues, feeling constantly ‘on edge’ or struggling to properly relax can all be signs that the mind and body have been carrying too much for too long.

Often people blame themselves, but these are not personality flaws or weaknesses. Very often they are signs of a nervous system stuck in survival mode.

The good news is that the nervous system can learn safety again.

Trauma and the Brain

When we’ve been through trauma, our brains adapt in powerful ways. They wire us for survival, mobilising us to stay alert, scan for danger, and react quickly. This response is protective but when it continues long after the danger has passed it can leave us feeling stuck in hyper-vigilance, anxiety, or exhaustion.

The good news is that the brain is not fixed. With the right support we can begin to rewire these patterns. Therapy, grounding techniques, and gentle self-awareness all help to create new pathways, ones that bring safety, calm, and connection back into daily life.

Healing doesn’t mean erasing what happened, it means teaching the brain and body that the danger is over, and that it’s safe to stand down. Step by step, you can move from surviving to thriving.

When you feel triggered it can feel really uncomfortable. Sometimes your chest tightens, your thoughts race, you suddenly feel emotional, angry, anxious or like you want to shut down or escape.

Often our triggers are pointing us towards an old wound, an old belief or a part of ourselves that once had to work very hard to stay safe.
Very often our reactions make sense when we slow down enough to really listen to them rather than judge them. Sometimes the trigger is not there to pull you backwards, but to show you the parts of you that need more tenderness and attention.

Waking up at 3am every night can feel incredibly frustrating but very often, waking in the night is not just bad sleep.

Sometimes it’s an anxious brain that never fully switches off. Sometimes it’s stress hormones rising too early. Sometimes it’s a nervous system that has become so used to being alert that deep rest no longer feels completely safe and in midlife especially, hormonal changes can make all of this even more intense.

Sleep is not something we can force and often the harder we try, the more pressure and frustration we create around it.
What usually helps most is not fighting the waking, but calming the nervous system overall. Learning how to slow the body, quiet the mind and create a sense of safety again.

If you wake at 3am regularly, you are not alone and you are definitely not broken. Your mind and body may simply be asking for support in a different way.

Hello - that is me and I am a therapist who understands anxiety.

I understand anxiety not just professionally, but personally too. I know what it feels like when your mind won’t switch off, when your body feels constantly on alert, and when even simple things can suddenly feel overwhelming. I also know how exhausting it can be trying to appear fine on the outside while battling racing thoughts and worry internally. I also know what intense panic feels like and understand that sometimes nothing can trigger it.
Because of this, I work with anxiety gently and without judgement. I don’t believe in telling people to stay calm or think positively. Anxiety usually has a reason for being there, even if it no longer feels helpful, and together we explore what your mind and nervous system may have learned over time.

In sessions, I use an integrative approach which may include counselling, hypnotherapy, EFT tapping, mindfulness and nervous system regulation tools to help you feel calmer, safer and more connected to yourself. My aim is not simply to manage symptoms, but to help you understand yourself with more compassion and gradually feel more able to live life without anxiety controlling it.

Anxiety can feel incredibly isolating, but you do not have to navigate it alone. Please contact me if you would like to talk further.

ADHD in Women: ‘How Did Nobody Notice?’

A topic close to my heart. So many women with ADHD grow up being described as ‘sensitive’, ‘chatty’, ‘dramatic’, ‘disorganised’, ‘lazy’, ‘too much’ or ‘away with the fairies’.
Many weren’t disruptive in school, so nobody spotted it. Instead, they became experts at things like masking, trying harder, overthinking, people pleasing or pushing themselves into exhaustion just to keep up.

And perhaps underneath it all was often a constant feeling of ‘Why does everything seem harder for me than everyone else?’

ADHD in women can show up as things such as anxiety, burnout, emotional overwhelm, forgetfulness, rejection sensitivity, racing thoughts, insomnia, starting everything and finishing nothing, or feeling permanently mentally cluttered.

Many women reach adulthood before finally realising they were never ‘failing’ at life. Their brain was simply working differently.

And there can be something incredibly emotional about finally understanding yourself with more compassion instead of criticism.

WHEN STRESS BECOMES YOUR NORMAL

Do you ever feel as though you’re constantly switched on even when there’s nothing particularly wrong? Perhaps your mind never really switches off and you overthink conversations at night, feel guilty for resting, wake up tired, or notice your shoulders are always tense without even realising it. For many people, stress builds so gradually that it simply starts to feel like our personality rather than pressure.

I work with lots of people who say and think things like ‘I thought this was just how everyone felt’ or ‘I didn’t realise how anxious I’d become until I stopped for a moment’. When the nervous system has been carrying stress for a long time, calm can actually start to feel unfamiliar.

Through counselling, hypnotherapy, EFT tapping, breathwork, mindfulness and nervous system regulation techniques, I help people gently move out of survival mode and reconnect with a sense of safety, calm and balance again. Often it isn’t about becoming a completely different person, but about helping your mind and body realise they no longer in any danger.
