The risks we take as canine professionals….

Bruce the French Bulldog had IVDD and suddenly became paralysed.

He had surgery at theralphvetreferralcentre to remove the disc material which was blocking the spinal cord, which allowed the signals to start reaching his legs.

He is back moving, and is a little uncoordinated - but that doesn’t stop him - even before now, he would sometimes stand on just his front legs when he was very excited!

Hydrotherapy and physiotherapy work together to strengthening his legs and back and help him learn to walk better, and prevent overuse of his front legs, neck and shoulders, which can lead to pain

Hershey has just turned 5 and already had surgery on both his back knees.

He is very weak and deconditioned, and so his walking is a little unsteady, and he doesn’t like being on his feet for too long.

This suggests that he is probably in a bit of pain, and although hydrotherapy can help reduce pain, his owners are going to have a review with the vet for some analgesia.

Not only will this make him more comfortable, but will make rehab more effective, and progress quicker.

Working with the whole veterinary team is so important to get the best results for any dog.

Keep following for an update on Hersheys progress in a few weeks!

Billy the long-legged-leaner came to us after developing pain and limping with no clear cause. He was clearly sore in his back legs, so sore that he was quite guarded when we handled him, and the vets even gave use a warning that he could be a bit aggressive!

Gait assessment suggested that the main issue was at his feet (softer ground was clearly more comfortable!) and he was very sore around the muscles of his back hips too.

After a bit of investigation by his owners, some corns were found in his feet, which we think were causing him to hobble and make his other muscles very sore.

Hydrotherapy helped to build up the muscles in his back legs, and reduce the pain, and his walking is almost back to normal! Just one more corn to remove!

So many things can affect how a dog’s musculoskeletal system works, it’s important to take a holistic view to find out the route cause!
