Funerals are for the living, in this Dying Matters Week we explore the importance of choice, we encourage people to look at all options for future funerals carefully and we are asking people to 'start the conversation with their family' before they decide their preplanning route; because you only have one chance to make the right decision and particularly, the right decision for those who are left behind...

There is a quiet power in being present. Did you know that 79% of people find attending a funeral essential for acknowledging their loss?
We pride ourselves on the total choice we offer families here in the community, offering a real, heartfelt goodbye that feels right for you – in any way that may be... through a favourite song, a shared story, a hug or a much-needed moment of laughter.
That's why we are sharing the Handled With Care film with you today, please share it with family and friends and start the conversation...

The Matthew Gallagher Award is presented in memory of a highly respected funeral director and educator, and recognises students who have demonstrated outstanding ability, applied their training in a meaningful way, and—most importantly—overcome personal, professional, or educational challenges to complete their qualifications.
Lee Wilkins, from our Bishop's Stortford funeral home was awarded the Matthew Gallagher Award in 2023 by the Independent Funeral Directors College, recognising his exceptional performance, professionalism, and commitment during his studies.
In 2025, his colleague Tom Riches, from our Old Harlow funeral home, was honored with the same award, demonstrating a continued tradition of excellence. Together, their achievements highlight a shared commitment to compassion, professionalism, and high-quality service within the funeral directing field.
Daniel Robinson & Sons are immensely proud to have two members of their team recognised with this prestigious award, reflecting the organisation’s ongoing commitment to excellence and the highest standards of care within the profession.
On the 9th May, the IFD College will be announcing this year's Award winner, well done to the finalists, we wish you all the very best of luck.

The importance of the conversation.
You may have watched the poignant conclusion to Call The Midwife which used as part of its final story, the death of the beloved character Sister Monica Joan, the elderly Nun who was facing the end of her life.
The brilliant and sensitive way that her closing chapter was depicted showed her requesting to speak with her Funeral Director, ensuring her life was remembered in a way she felt would be important.
She touched on the rituals and rights befitting her life as a Nun, but she also made requests that paid respects to her life and work.
We have often been called to speak with someone who is facing this same closing chapter, wanting peace of mind knowing that their wishes were going to be understood and put in place when that day comes.
We are always honoured to be asked to bear witness to these wishes and are privileged to carry out those wishes with care, respect and compassion,
Thank you to the BBC for helping to create a conversation and showing the importance of a Funeral.
Have the conversation, let your voice and wishes be heard, it will be the greatest gift for those who care for you and will allow them to celebrate your life as you would wish.
