β˜€οΈπŸŒ‘οΈ HEATWAVE HEALTH TIP: DON'T FORGET ABOUT MEDICATION STORAGE πŸŒ‘οΈβ˜€οΈ

When the weather gets hot, most of us remember to drink more water and stay out of the midday sun. But did you know that high temperatures can also affect some medications?

Many medicines are designed to be stored below certain temperatures, and prolonged exposure to heat, direct sunlight, or hot environments such as conservatories and parked cars may affect how well they work.

βœ… Keep medicines in a cool, dry place
βœ… Store them away from direct sunlight and heat sources
βœ… Leave medicines in their original packaging whenever possible
βœ… Check whether any medications need to be kept in the refrigerator
βœ… Never leave medicines in a parked car, even for a short time

It's also worth checking regularly for any signs that medication may have been affected by the heat. If tablets, capsules, creams, or liquids appear melted, discoloured, leaking, cloudy, or otherwise unusual, speak to a pharmacist before using them.

Heatwaves can be particularly challenging for older people and those with long-term health conditions. If you're supporting an elderly relative, friend, or neighbour, a quick check that they're staying cool, hydrated, and storing their medications correctly can make a real difference.

πŸ’§ Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day
🏑 Keep living spaces as cool as possible
πŸ‘΅ Check in on older family members and neighbours
πŸ’Š Ensure medicines are being stored according to the instructions provided

At Nannies 4 Grannies, we're committed to promoting the wellbeing and safety of older people in our communities, especially during periods of extreme weather.

Stay safe, stay cool, and look after one another. πŸ’›

🏑 When is the right time to start home help for an older loved one?

Many people wait until daily tasks become difficult or a health crisis occurs. But research suggests that introducing support earlier can help people stay independent for longer. A major 2024 review published in The BMJ found that community-based interventions can help older adults maintain independence and continue living at home, while research into early frailty support has shown benefits from intervening before needs become more significant. Sources: BMJ (2024), HomeHealth Trial (The Lancet, 2023).

Home support is not about taking over. It's about providing the right level of assistance with everyday tasks such as housekeeping, meal preparation, shopping, companionship, and mobility support, while encouraging people to remain active and involved in their own routines.

At Nannies 4 Grannies, we understand that no two people are the same. That's why we tailor our support around each individual's wants, needs, interests and lifestyle. Our experienced local team is passionate about advocating for independent living, empowering older adults to remain in control of their lives while receiving just the right amount of support.

βœ… The best time to explore support is often when: β€’ Everyday tasks are becoming more tiring
β€’ Confidence is starting to decline
β€’ Family members are taking on increasing caring responsibilities
β€’ Small changes could prevent bigger problems later

Starting support early isn't giving up independence. In many cases, it's the best way to protect it. ❀️

β˜€οΈ Going on holiday? We'll help make sure your loved one isn't home alone. πŸ’œ

πŸ’œ Looking After Our Community πŸ’œ

At Nannies 4 Grannies, we understand that scams and fraud are becoming increasingly common and can be worrying for both older adults and their families. We believe that raising awareness and sharing helpful information is one small way we can support our community and help keep people safe.

If you think you may have been affected by a scam, or if something simply doesn't feel right, it may be worth taking a few simple steps:

βœ… Contact your bank if you notice any unusual transactions
βœ… Change passwords, particularly for email and online banking accounts
βœ… Check your credit report for any unexpected activity
βœ… Be cautious of unexpected calls, emails or text messages asking for personal information
βœ… Speak to a trusted family member, friend or professional if you're unsure

For those concerned about identity fraud, Cifas Protective Registration offers an additional layer of protection by requesting extra checks when applications are made in your name. There is currently a fee of Β£30 for two years' protection.

Useful sources of advice and support:

πŸ”Ή Cifas: https://www.cifas.org.uk
πŸ”Ή JustMe App: https://www.just-me.uk
πŸ”Ή Action Fraud: https://www.actionfraud.police.uk

Please remember that scams can affect anyone. There is never any shame in asking for advice or support. By looking out for ourselves and each other, we can help create a safer community for everyone.

πŸ’œ Why Home Help Can INCREASE Independence at Home πŸ’œ

One of the biggest misconceptions about home help is that accepting support means losing independence. In reality, the opposite is often true.

Research from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends that home care focuses on what people can do, helping older adults maintain their skills, confidence and independence for as long as possible.

A good home help service encourages people to stay involved in everyday life. Whether it's preparing a meal together, enjoying a walk, shopping, or providing companionship, small amounts of practical support can make a big difference, helping people remain safe, confident and independent at home.

For many families, non-personal care respite is equally valuable. Whether a family carer needs to attend an appointment, take a well-earned break or simply recharge, having a trusted companion with their loved one provides reassurance and peace of mind.

Home help can also play an important role in regaining confidence after an illness, fall or hospital stay. Gentle encouragement, practical support and companionship can help people rebuild confidence, return to everyday routines and reduce feelings of isolation during recovery.

At Nannies 4 Grannies, we believe home help should empower rather than replace. As a local, friendly home help service, we provide companionship, practical home help, non-personal care respite and encouragement to help older adults remain happy, safe and independent in the place they know and love most – their own home. πŸ’œ

β˜• A cup of tea, a friendly chat, and a smile can make all the difference. πŸ’œ

Sometimes it's the simplest moments that mean the most. Whether it's enjoying a coffee together, sharing stories, or getting out into the community, companionship plays a vital role in helping older adults stay connected, confident, and independent.

At Nannies4Grannies, we believe no one should feel alone. Our friendly local team has been supporting older people across St Albans, Harpenden, Wheathampstead, Redbourn, Radlett, and the surrounding villages since 2014, providing companionship, practical home help, and plenty of smiles along the way.

If you or a loved one could benefit from a little extra support, we'd love to hear from you.

πŸ’™ Learning together to make a difference. πŸ’™

Today, our team had the pleasure of taking part in a fantastic dementia training session delivered by Visiting Angels. 🧠✨

It was an incredibly informative and thought-provoking session that provided a safe space to share best practice, discuss real-life experiences, and learn from one another. 🀝 These conversations are invaluable in helping us better understand the challenges faced by people living with dementia and those who support them every day. πŸ’™

At Nannies 4 Grannies, we are passionate about continually learning and developing our knowledge so that we can provide the very best companionship, understanding and support to our clients and their families. 🌼🏑

A huge thank you to Visiting Angels for facilitating such an engaging and inspiring session. πŸ™ By working together, sharing experiences and supporting one another, we can continue to make a positive difference to the lives of those living with dementiaβ€”not just for our clients, but throughout our wider community. πŸ’™βœ¨

🌞 What a fantastic day we had at Wheathampstead Village Day on Saturday 11th July! πŸŽ‰

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by our stand to say hello, ask for advice, or chat about our companionship and home help service for themselves or a loved one. It was wonderful to meet so many new faces, as well as catch up with some of our lovely existing clients.

We were also delighted to be interviewed by .6 – thank you!

A special shout out to Wheathampstead Parish Council for organising such a brilliant community event. We love being part of Village Day every year, and this was by far the biggest one we've ever seen! It was fantastic to see so many families, local businesses, charities and community groups coming together.

Lovely event, lovely people, and a truly wonderful community. We can't wait to do it all again next year! πŸ’™
