🐍 Adder Season Is Here — Would You Know What to Do?
We’re seeing more adder sightings than usual this year, especially around the North East. If you’re out walking your dog on moorland, dunes, woodland edges or sunny paths, it’s worth knowing the signs and what to do.
Adders are the UK’s only venomous snake, and while bites are rare, they can be serious for dogs.
🚨 Signs your dog may have been bitten:
• Sudden yelp or jump back
• Swelling (often on the face or leg)
• Pain, licking or limping
• Pale gums, weakness, or vomiting in severe cases
🐾 What to do (Pet First Aid guidance):
• Keep your dog calm and still — movement spreads venom faster
• Carry them if possible
• Call your vet immediately
• Do NOT apply ice, tourniquets, or attempt to suck venom
• Get to the vet quickly — treatment is very effective when prompt
🌿 Where adders are most active right now:
Sunny spots, long grass, dunes, heathland, woodland edges, and paths where they bask.
