Another Maes ART course complete in the beautiful village of Tribunj Croatia….. people ask why another….this I will explain after a couple of days reflection and rest. An amazing week with my international colleagues deepening our knowledge of our children, understanding the brain and the importance of this on understanding our children to provide the deepest analysis, forward thinking and effective therapy we can 💞💞

What if it’s not spasticity you're treating?

In a peer review, Pia Stampe reviewed a 2-year-old with CP (GMFCS I–II) who presented with velocity-dependent stiffness in his legs, and she reframed the whole picture.

The stiffness wasn’t spasticity. It's the strategy his body found to compensate for a weak core.

Which changes everything about where you intervene - it’s not Botox for spasticity, it’s managing what’s happening at the trunk

As Pia put it:

"Whatever he's practicing, he's gonna get better at. So what is it that we can do to help him move more easily."

Get the trunk and pelvis connected and aligned, and the spasticity melts away.

This one reframe shifts your focus - and it's exactly the kind of clinical thinking we love to do in CEO.

As physios we all know very well that manual handing advice may not always be followed in one’s home 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️ and as professionals we need to learn not to ask questions such as ‘how did John get in that boat 🤔🤔🤔’ (it certainly wasn’t with a hoist and assistance of two 🫣)However look at the pure joy on his face. John has just had a lovely weekend away with his family in an adapted holiday stay in Scotland . Link below incase anyone is interested in checking it out 💞https://www.homelands-fife.co.uk/

Progress never stops 💞If you believe the research, the literature and the medics Maggie was expected to reach a developmental plateau around the age of 5-6 years old. Maggie has dyskinetic cerebral palsy and first came to The Physio Hub at about 7 years old. She was unable to sit, crawl or transfer independently. Look at her today 😍 she is absolutely rocking secondary school and her level of skill and independence continues to amaze me. I have absolutely no doubt Maggie will continue to progress her skills with the right help. Maes therapy challenges the developmental trajectory placed on our children and is a very different approach to traditional therapies but the results 😍😍😍 amazing! and continue to amaze me week in and week out. Forever proud Maggie. Well done you 💞

So proud this morning 💞. Never ever let a label define you. Sophie has been labelled a CP GMFCS level 5 by the medical profession……for those that don’t understand levels, that is the highest classification of Cerebral palsy one can receive. Look at this lovely sit to stand and her amazing Mr Potatoe heads she has sat and done this morning whilst sitting independently. Amazing wonderful Sophie 💞💞. Maes therapy…… challenging the norms, analysis and treatment of a child from a brain prespective 💞
